Covering America: The Face Mask Initiative
Donation protected
What: Facemasks for those in need
When: For the duration of the pandemic
Why: Because everyone should be able to get a mask if they desire one, even if they are without the means to purchase it.
As lifelong sewers (Melinda 50 years, Latria 15+) we realize we have a skill that we can use to better the lives of those around us, so about two months ago we started making face masks, and donating them to retail workers in need. To date we've sent out over 500 masks from the materials we had at home.
While we make mask for adults, we specialize in making masks for children, and masks with lip-reading inserts for those that interact with people that are deaf and/or hard of hearing and thus rely on reading lips.
The prices of materials are 3x-10x what they were before the pandemic started, and there are materials that we didn't keep on hand before (namely vinyl, elastic and ribbon) that we have to purchase in order to make masks. I (Latria) am a cosplayer, so I whipped out all the character cottons I had (Black Panther, Doc McStuffins, Dr. Seuss, Disney Princesses, Harry Potter) in order to make masks that we thought kids (and adults) might want to wear.
We know that there are people outside of our current radius that also need help, and we're doing our part to send masks to those regions too, but mailing masks costs money.
So we're asking for your help.
We have the knowledge and attention to detail to get this done, and depending on the day we make between 25-40 masks to send out.
How will the money be used?
All funds will go to purchase materials, or mail masks to those outside of the region.
Where will these masks go?
There's still a large need here in Spartanburg, and we're working with several nonprofits to get masks to cancer survivors, children that have to go in and out of hospitals, and front line retail workers. We're also answering the calls for masks from indigenous populations like Navajo Nation, which has a large number of cases.
What if I need a mask?
