I met Esther at Parks Junior High. We clicked the first day we met and we’ve been close since. Those who met Esther from Parks or Sunny Hills, you’ll remember that she always had a smile on her face and she’s the first to help those in need.
Esther has a big heart; she has worked with the disabled and kids since 1985. She currently works in an infant/toddler class at a Christian preschool. At her second job on weekends, she supports adults with developmental disabilities to help them live on their own.
Esther and Pete met in 1988, she was 20 and he was 21. They worked at a group home for the disabled and they’ve been inseparable since. Together, they raised 3 beautiful kids, Joshua 29, Jacob 24, and Jazmin 17. Pete is like Esther; he always has a smile on his face. He’s funny and sweet with a hearty laugh you can hear from down the hall. He’s is the rock of their family.
In March, a friend with whom they went to church tested positive for Covid-19. Pete started feeling under the weather, so he and Esther tested for Covid, they were negative. By the end of the week, Pete was feeling worse. Esther took him to urgent care, again he tested negative for Covid. The next morning, Pete’s breathing was labored, and he was lethargic. Esther was scared, she called 911. At the hospital, Pete tested positive for Covid and his oxygen level was only at 70. Pete has been in ICU since. From the day of his first symptoms to the time he was admitted to the hospital was only one week. This virus is quick and brutal!
Pete has Covid Pneumonia and is also dealing with Covid-induced Cytokine Storm. He was on a BiPAP machine until yesterday when it wasn’t enough, and he was intubated. The doctors will be putting a feeding tube in him tomorrow.
Pete worked as a heavy machine mechanic for the county until he retired in December 2020. Pete told Esther last week he wishes he would have taken Covid seriously and he doesn’t wish this upon anybody.
The doctor has been honest with Esther. He told her that Pete’s prognosis is 20/80, maybe 30% at best. If he recovers, he may have to be on oxygen for the rest of his life. He’s only 54!
Their boys are moving back home to help out. Esther is trying to cut her hours at work to spend whatever time she can with Pete at the hospital. He’s allowed 2 daily visits from her. A few people have asked how they can help, so I decided to start this Gofundme. The proceeds will go directly to Esther to help them with medical bills and unforeseen expenses. Any help you can give them is so much appreciated. Please share. Thank you!
