Fundraising for the Covid Memorial Project in DC
Donation protected
(Hi all -- with the separate Venmo donations we hit the donation goal on the last day of the project so we are turning off the GoFundMe donations now. Thank you to everyone that donated!)
The Covid Memorial Project is a remembrance of all the lives lost to the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States as we cross the stunning threshold of 200,000 deaths.
It will install 20,000 American flags this week on the National Mall on the grounds of the Washington Monument, facing the White House to represent & memorialize each of these lives, while serving to recognize two hard facts:
This extreme loss of life is staggering -- but was not inevitable: the President's poor handling of the virus response has led to tens of thousands of excess deaths.
And this administration has done nothing to memorialize this stunning number of lives lost -- instead choosing to downplay, minimize, and ignore whenever possible. No flags lowered, no service held, no day of mourning declared -- so the COVID Memorial Project seeks to simply say: these lives are more than a statistic -- they were family, friends, neighbors.
Dozens of local volunteers will instlal the flags, with all 20,000 in place on Tuesday, September 22nd. They will remain in place through sunset on Wednesday, September 23rd.,
On Tuesday at 9 a.m., there will be a brief memorial service led by interfaith leaders.
The COVID Memorial Project is organized by a group of friends in DC and is not affiliated with or funded by any other entity or organization.
Each flag is 20 cents, so even a dollar donated "adopts" 5 of these flags. Any donation, $5, $10, $20 helps, so thank you so much for your contribution and for being a part of this. Please limit your donations to no more than $20 per person -- we don't have far to go and want to make sure as many people as possible are able to participate.
We also need volunteers for installation on Monday (9/21) afternoon from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and removal on Wednesday (9/23) from 5:30 p.m. -- if you would like to help, or have any questions, please email [email redacted].
