Emergency Relief Fund for Daily Wage Earners

COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdown has caused a huge disruption to the earning capabilities of the most vulnerable people in Bangladesh, such as rickshaw-pullers, day labourers, cleaners, street vendors, especially those living in already marginalised communities. 

Resource Co-ordination Network Bangladesh (RCNB) is a grassroots organisation delivering food packages that last a family of 4 for a month. 

Each package costs approximately Tk. 2900 ($34/£28) The package includes: 

Rice (miniket) 30 kg - (50tk/kg) - Tk. 1500 
Lentils 6 kg - (80tk/kg) - Tk. 480 
Potatoes 10 kg - (25tk/kg) - Tk. 250 
Oil 2 litres - (110tk/kg) - Tk. 220 
Salt 1 packet - (40tk/kg) - Tk. 40 
Onion 2 kg - (85tk/kg) - Tk. 170 
Spices 100 gm each (chilli, tumeric and coriander) - (40tk/kg) - Tk. 120 
Soap 3 pieces - (40tk/kg) - 120 

We are now a part of the #BacharLorai movement who are helping us expand and strengthen our initiatives. #BacharLorai is a social movement to combine support from Bangladeshi expats, citizens and grass-roots organizations who are all participating in this fight together. 

Communities we are currently supporting: 

1. Bede Community (Keraniganj)
- Every week providing 50 Bede families with 2 weeks of food relief. This area has around 400 families from this community.

2. We for Them Org. (33 wards of Rangpur District)
- Every month providing 300 daily wage-earning families with a month worth of food relief.

3. HR Foundation (Bhadrashon Chor & Faridpur)
- Every week providing 100-200 daily wage earning families with a week’s worth of food.

4. Shoron Rahman (Slum Areas of Uttara, Dhaka)
- Initiative 1: Providing weekly rations to 100 families with daily wage earners as heads of household (Pakuria Slum) 
- Initiative 2: Providing monthly rations to 10 families from lower income groups (Uttarkhan, Dakshinkhan) 
- Initiative 3: Providing monthly rations to 20 families with the head of household laid off from the RMG sector (Baunia Slum) 

5. Waste Collectors of Dhaka city (Collaboration with Garbagemanbd)
- Providing hygiene kits (reusable gloves, soap, masks, protective outfit and a small food incentive of rice and daal) to garbage waste collectors. 
- Phase 1 - 250 units (Dhaka North): 22 April - 27 April 
- Phase 2 - 250 units (Dhaka South): 28 April - 5th May 

6. Santal Community (Joypurpara, Rangpur)
- There are approximately 300 daily wage-earning households here. We will be providing monthly rations to 50 families every week. This initiative is due to begin next week.

7. Bihari Community (Adamjee Bihari Camp, Narayanganj)
- We will be providing monthly rations to 20 families every week. This initiative is due to begin next week.
