COVID-19 PPE FOR HCW IN ETHIOPIA

COVID-19 escalate shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Health care workers (HCW) are getting sicker from the Coronavirus than other patients. This statement is corroborated by data from a Harvard Study in China that suggested Health Care Workers were at a 20% increased risk of severe infection compared to the general public. This risk decreased once the Chinese implemented full gear: protective suit, medical goggle, face shield, gloves and N-95 masks which should continue to be the standard PPE for care of COVID-19 patients.
The loss of infected HCWs is a critical hit to an already strained set of professionals in Ethiopia such as physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists or nurses and nursing aides. Like other Governments, Ethiopia is facing supply shortages risking front line health care workers, adding thorns to sores. Recommendations to protect Health Care Workers should not be based on what’s available; but availability should be based on what is necessary. Other countries are reporting COVID-19’s impact on their health care community. Spain has said at least 12,298 health care workers have tested positive for the disease, 14.4% of the total reported cases. More than 60 doctors have died in Italy. In USA: Ohio, reported at least 16% of its cases involved health care workers, while in Minnesota, it was 28% on Wednesday (4/8/2020). Washington state had more than 9,887 cases and New York had counted more than 161,807. Neither state knows how many of those cases are health care workers. Worldwide data needs to be reinforced.
Since reporting its first coronavirus case on March 13, Ethiopia, a major transport hub, has closed land borders and schools, freed thousands of prisoners to ease overcrowding, sprayed main streets in the capital Addis Ababa with disinfectant, and discouraged large gatherings, halted interstate transportation, now currently blocked all transportation including motor bicycle and Bajaaj.
Home to over 110 million people, Ethiopia has recorded 55 coronavirus cases and two deaths to date (4/8/2020), and declared a state of emergency in the country to help curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in fear of the continuity of current trends, like many other countries: Italy totally locked down, Japan declared a state of emergency amid a spike in coronavirus cases, as Singapore began a partial lockdown and other countries extended stay-at-home orders to curb the spread of the disease.
Globally, the number of people diagnosed with the virus now exceeds 1.7 million. More than 108,036 people have died while nearly 401,589 have recovered, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University on 4/11/2020, the data changes so quickly.
Hadiyya Diaspora and Ethiopians kindly requested to be part of the ongoing support in order to stop such an indiscriminate killer and assist all rounded effort in Ethiopia. The Fund will be directed to purchase Health care workers personal protective equipment (PPE) and cover training sessions of Donning and Doffing of the protective gears to Hadiyya zone hospitals. The GoFundMe donation will be pooled in the USA, Wells Fargo Bank; Hadiyyooma Networking Forum account: 2860786496, then used for purchases of PPE here in the USA or will be transferred to the zonal account number as set out by the COVID-19 task force for purchases of PPE locally having weighed the cost benefits. The Hadiyya Zone task force Account number is in the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia: 1000327604906, as confirmed by the zonal administration seal. Receipts of the purchase of PPE either in the USA or locally in Ethiopia will have to be monitored and verified strictly, meanwhile facilitating a commendation letter to each donor. All are invited to join and help.
God Bless Ethiopia.
