Covid-19 Relief for Patricia L. DeRusha

September 24, 1960 – April 29th 2020

Patty gained her angel wings after a long, hard fight with the Covid-19 virus on April 29th, at 8:15pm with her loving daughter by her side.

On April 7th, Patty started showing signs of Covid-19. The Sanctuary in West St. Paul, an assisted living facility tested Patty for Covid-19. On April 9th, Patty was sent by ambulance to United Hospital as her symptoms continued to worsen. After being at the hospital overnight, The Sanctuary called the hospital to inform hospital staff of positive Covid-19 tests results.

Patty moved into The Sanctuary assisted living facility in early January 2020 to receive assistance with her everyday needs. Patty’s daughter Mary visited her in January and due to Mary’s emergency medical needs and the visitor restrictions at The Sanctuary, did not get to see her again until April 29, 2020.

The Sanctuary stopped allowing visitors on March 16th and the MN shelter in place went into effect shortly after on March 27th. Mary would call the facility daily to check on Patty due to Patty not having a working phone. She was reassured each day that Patty was healthy and safe.

On the morning of April 10th, Mary received a phone call from Patty’s case manager informing her that Patty was at United with a confirmed positive Covid-19 test result. Mary was instantly overwhelmed with emotions and the need for answers.

While in the hospital, Mary was able to speak with Patty with the help of nurses. Patty was very confused and didn’t understand why she was in the hospital. Due to Patty’s underlying health conditions, her condition progressed quickly. Patty was on o2 while struggling to breath, had a fever and a reported crackle in her lungs. On April 11th, Patty was transferred to the ICU unit and placed on a ventilator. On April 14th, Patty was placed on full life support and in a medically induced coma. On April 15th the doctors started to be concerned of Patty’s kidney function. April 17th, ICU doctors contemplated if being on life support was helping or making her condition worse, while Patty’s BP dropped to dangerously low levels. Patty suffered from kidney damage, needing insulin, low blood pressure, increased damage to her lungs and blood clots due to Covid-19.

While trying to bring Patty out of the medically induced coma, they would place the phone to her ear for Mary and Patty’s brother Rob to speak to her, praying for a response. Mary continue to ask family and friends for prayers.

On April 29th, Mary received a call from a concerned ICU doctor. After begging and pleading, Mary was finally allowed to be by her mother’s side as they placed Patty on comfort care. Patty’s brother Rob, her grandchildren Cody, Hailey and Devan, her best friend Tammy and Mary’s fiancé all got to say their goodbyes by phone.

Patty is from the West Side of St. Paul and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1978. She was a proud mother and grandmother. Anyone that ever-met Patty, instantly loved her. Patty always had a smile on her face, she cared deeply and was always supportive. Patty loved spending time with friends and family and enjoyed her casino time.

Funeral services will take place at Summit Funeral and Cremation in Inver Grove Heights. She was loved by so many and Mary has decided to post pone services until everyone can celebrate Patty’s life together.

Please consider donating to help cover Patty’s funeral costs, no amount is too small.

Thank you all for the love and support and As Mary would say, “Rest in Paradise Mama.”
