Friends and Family,
As most of you know, I hate asking for things, but in February, I am headed to Mwanza, Tanzania for six weeks to volunteer at Forever Angels Baby Home, and I need your help.
There are thousands of orphaned and abandoned children in Africa for a whole multitude of reasons, but most link directly to poverty. In Tanzania, 20 women die every single day in childbirth. This leaves 20 babies every day at risk of malnourishment or death. Formula is so expensive that traditionally, extended family members are forced to place these babies in orphanages, and very often, they are not encouraged or supported to return for them.
Forever Angel's model is trying to change this. They do everything in their power to keep families together and to support and empower families to raise their own children. Their Maisha Matters model has enabled over 500 babies to receive life saving nutrition, while remaining at home with their relatives. That's 500 babies who never needed to enter an orphanage!
Forever Angels is also an interim care home for infants, babies, and young toddlers in Mwanza who have no known relatives or whose relatives are not able to care for them. They provide nutritious food and a stable start to life in a safe and loving environment while working towards reintegrating children with family members or hoping for an adoptive family for those who are abandoned. 80% of the children who enter their care have returned to live with their biological families or have been adopted into new families.
I am excited and humbled to have the opportunity to spend time at such an incredible organization. I promise to share photos and updates along the way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
A ton of love,
Emily
