Craig's Care
Donation protected
I am Nealy Yakes, this is the hardest, and yet most important thing that I may ever do. I am reaching out to start a fundraising campaign on behalf of my family while we navigate an incredibly difficult time in our lives. This past July (of 2015) my father, Craig Yakes was diagnosed with liver cancer. It was just six years ago, in 2009, that he battled a brain tumor.
The news has been devastating, and we are hoping to have the ability to provide the care that will be required as we move forward through this process. It is heartbreaking to know that so many people go through this experience, whether it be themselves, a family member or a friend. Watching the people that I love the most have to go through something like this is terrifying, all we can do is find ways to support him on this journey.
After the initial diagnosis, my father received a second opinion at the Mayo Hospital System in Rochester, Minnesota. On October 13th he was scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor that was located on the right side of his liver. During the surgery they discovered three more tumors on the left side of his liver, and therefore, they were unable to complete the procedure. This was incredibly devastating because having the procedure was the best case scenario, and allowed my dad to hold onto hope and positivity as he faced this uncertain time. After a series of tests and consultations the medical team that is treating my father has decided to perform an aggressive, localized form of chemotherapy. We are thankful for where he is, and to all of the people involved in his care. This is the beginning of a difficult journey, but I am hoping to do anything for a man that would do what he could for anyone who was in need.
I love my dad. He is and has been an amazing father and friend. He is a good and kind man that has dedicated his life to his family. My dad was an elementary school teacher and principal and coach. I know that all the kids that he worked with over the years brought him so much joy and happiness. He is also a man that served his country as a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne. I could not be more proud of and thankful for the man that my father is. He taught us to think of others first and to never judge another person, because everyone has a story. I am offering a part of our story with the intention of helping my family in anyway that I can. My dad is also now a grandad, and he has the most beautiful relationship with his grandkids. My brother, sister, and I were lucky to have him as a dad, and we are hoping to hold onto him for as long as we can, so that his grandkids can share and receive the wisdom and love that he has given us. His grandkids are his strength, he is a man with so many people and so much love to live for.
My parents are retired and have entered the time in their life where they are living with a limited income. The funds that we are hoping to raise will be used to ease the financial demands, stress and pressure that the type of his treatment requires. I believe in hope, I believe in the power of love, and I choose to dwell in possibilities during this time. I don't know if there will be words to describe the gratitude we will feel for any help we receive during this time.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. Be kind, and hug the ones you love the most, a little longer each day!
Sincerely,
The Yakes Family
