Vision Equipment for Aunt Shawn

Donazione protetta
My name is Crystal Wilson. I’m trying to help my aunt (Shawn Roseborough) get special visual equipment. Throughout her life, she has suffered several eye problems/ conditions. These include several infections, dry eyes, Astigmatism, Ocular Hypertension, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Peripheral Vision Loss, Photophobia (Light Sensitivity) Corneal Edema, and Corneal Dystrophy.

In dealing with those eye problems, she has had 20 eye surgeries. Her surgeries include several Cataract Removals, Len Implants, Laser Trabeculoplasty, Trabeculotomy, and Revised Trabeculotomy (Glaucoma Surgeries), Glaucoma shunts, and two major Corneal Transplants called Penetrating Keratoplasty or (PK), and Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty or (DSEK)

About ten years ago, she lost her vision in her left eye. Since then, she -along with her excellent team of doctors- has been struggling to help her save the right eye. In spite of her having her 20th eye surgery (A major corneal transplant in October of 2015) and put through various extensive testing, she still has not gained the vision that she and her doctors were hoping for. Therefore, because of her vision acuity being way out of the normal range and the condition that her eyes are in now, her doctor has declared her legally blind.

Aunt Shawn is such a fun, caring and loving person who loves to help others and make people laugh. She calls herself Crazyiis (Eyes). She likes to dance, do crafts projects, cook, and go shopping at her favorite store (Walmart). Her passions are decorating, reading, and writing her poetry books. She became an author in 2012 and published two books. With many more that she has written and would like to continue to write and publish.

So as you can imagine, not being able to see normally has been not only devastating to her, but a life changing situation for her and her family. And she and her doctors are not giving up hope that one day she still might gain a little more sight back. Right now she is facing this extremely difficult situation and trying to adapt to a different type of life.

In fact, Aunt Shawn has started taking rehabilitation classes to help show her how to deal with and manage being blind. She is learning how to carry out everyday normal life activities such as reading her mail, cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning, paying bills, taking care of personal needs etc. and also be able to continue to enjoy the things she likes and loves to do and have some independence and self worth and dignity as any other person.

In order for her to do these things, she needs to have the proper specialized technical vision equipment and technical visual supplies. Such as talking cooking utensils, special grooming supplies, talking visual enhancement reading equipment, specialized talking computers and computer software, specialized HD visual monitors, cleaning visual aids, special talking equipment for outdoor use (such as for shopping, crossing streets, etc) and visual aids to help maneuver steps etc.

However, these special technical vision equipment and supplies can range anywhere from twenty (20) dollars to way over ten thousand (10,000) dollars.

Below is just a list of a few of the specialized visual equipment that Aunt Shawn's Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (that she works with) strongly recommends and feels that these are properly fitted and are suitable for her needs.
