John McCurdy's Journey

Donation protected
John McCurdy never met a stranger. He is always smiling and always willing to help others. As a child he learned to walk and become independent in spite of the Cerebral Palsy that doctors feared would lead to a life of disability. With a determined spirit and a strong faith in God, John overcame the obstacles before him. He learned to walk. He learned to drive. He attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, where he became a much loved member of Pi Kappa Phi. John’s love for his college and his fraternity family has never waned and he is an avid supporter of UNCC sports. After college, John became a hard-working and loyal employee, developing lasting professional relationships with his clients and co-workers at the same company for over 25 years.

John has overcome more obstacles and challenges than most of us have faced, and now he must do it again. In September of 2023, John was hospitalized with septic shock. The treatment and medications that were necessary to save his life ultimately deprived his hands and feet of their blood supply, requiring their amputation. This not only brings new physical challenges for John to overcome, but also a host of unanticipated expenses related to medical bills, long term rehabilitation, medical equipment, transportation, in-home care, and renovations needed to make his home accessible, functional and safe for him.

John’s humble independence makes it challenging for him to ask for this kind of help, but he has agreed and so here we are. This GoFundMe was established to ask those who are able to donate to join us in helping to meet all of his needs as John works to overcome these new obstacles and challenges. Your generous support means the world to John, and to his family and his friends! We cannot thank you enough! If you are unable to donate financially, or are not local and able to help physically or materially, please share this GoFundMe with others, and above all, we appreciate and thank you for your prayers!

To learn more about John’s story, please take the time to watch this YouTube video. The UNCC football team shared John’s story in their “Mining for Greatness” series on ESPN plus. John and his story are introduced at the nine minute mark of the video.
