Crossroads Yarn in Waco, Texas

Donation protected
Texas is a huge state with many, many crafters from deep, east Texas to El Paso in west Texas. As large as Texas is, there are many places within this state that do not have a local yarn shop. These crafters often have to travel hundreds of miles to get to the closest yarn store to touch and feel their yarn purchases; otherwise, they are only able to buy online. Most of the larger urban areas in Texas have multiple yarn stores, but once outside these urban areas, the pickings are slim. This is the case with Waco, Texas–home of the Magnolia Silos and Baylor University. Waco is a big, little town. It is equidistant between the DFW metroplex and Austin, Texas. It lies about 101 miles south of DFW and 102 miles north of Austin. Between these two points, within an over 200-mile stretch of road, there is only one yarn store: Crossroads Yarn.

Crossroads Yarn sits at a location south and west of downtown Waco–not far from Hewitt or west Waco–in a nondescript shopping strip. It is owned by three women, one of Native American and Latinx descent, who have struggled and sacrificed to keep the doors open for the past three years. They have developed a loyal set of customers, who rely on this shop for camaraderie and community.

Crossroads Yarn reached out to the organizers of the Hill Country Yarn Crawl and were denied entrance because they were considered to be too far north. They also reached out to the North Texas Yarn Crawl organizers and were denied entrance because they were considered too far south. This yarn shop sits alone in the Texas prairie, bringing the fiber arts to the people around central Texas and supplying them with quality yarn, needles, notions, and classes to improve their skills.

Crossroads Yarn has outgrown its little shop. They desperately need to move to a larger facility. They also would like to add fabric and quilting supplies to their shop. The one quilt shop in Waco, which had been in business for over 30 years, closed due to the retirement of the owner. There is a whole community of quilters in and around Waco with nowhere to obtain quality fabrics, notions, and services. Crossroads Yarn would like to service this quilting community as well as their fiber friends. An effective quilter out of Whitney, TX has agreed to come onboard with Crossroads Yarn to help them establish the quilt and fabric side of their business.

Crossroads Yarn is supplying a needed resource to their community, and they need our help. They need to move to a larger location to better serve their knitting community and to house this new aspect of their business. They are looking at a property located at I-35 and Highway 6 in a shopping center that is of high quality and easily accessible. Anyone who knows central Texas knows that this is a great location with lots of traffic and is convenient for people in and around Waco, West, and other points east and west of Waco.

Please donate! Every little bit helps. The goal is $60,000. This will help Crossroads Yarn move into the larger space, add more inventory, both for yarn and quilting enthusiasts and give them a small cushion as they get started in the new facility. Please help these ladies out!
