Crowning Our Legacy: Support a Black-Owned Beauty Store

My name is La' Shae Alexander, and I’m excited to share a groundbreaking vision with you. I am a 31-year-old entrepreneur from a small town outside of Oakland, CA named, Pittsburg, California, with deep roots in the legacy of Little Rock, Arkansas. My journey has been shaped by the resilience and innovation of the women in my family, who have taught me the power of turning challenges into opportunities.

Today, I am seeking your support to launch a Black-owned beauty supply store in Los Angeles, an investment of $250,000 that will not only celebrate our rich heritage but also create new opportunities within our community.

About Me:

My family’s history is a tapestry of strength and creativity. My grandmother, a pioneer in her own right, followed my military grandfather to the Bay Area out of love, leaving a legacy of resilience and innovation. Despite the struggles of the crack epidemic, which claimed many of my elders, loved ones, and a generation of matriarchs their stories have always inspired me. From Aunt Rosie Gaines, who sang with Prince, to my mother’s hair care expertise, and my Grandmother Ethel May Henry’s soul food restaurant, I carry their legacy with pride.

This beauty supply store will bridge the gap between the Black communities of the Bay Area and Los Angeles. It will be a space where our culture is celebrated, and where every Black girl can see her beauty reflected and honored. This venture will serve as a beacon for Black entrepreneurs, paving the way for future business owners in our community.

Despite Black consumers accounting for nearly 11.1% of total beauty spending in the U.S., with an annual expenditure of over $6.6 billion, Black ownership in the beauty industry remains strikingly low. A mere 2.5% of beauty brands are Black-owned, highlighting a significant disparity. Supporting Black-owned beauty businesses is crucial because it allows us to invest in an industry that not only caters to our unique needs but also empowers entrepreneurs within our community. By doing so, we can help bridge the ownership gap and foster economic growth within the Black community.

As a beauty supply owner, my goal is to fill my store with products created by Black hair care brands. I believe it's essential to support and uplift Black-owned businesses, especially in an industry that has historically profited from Black consumers without adequately representing or catering to our unique needs. By prioritizing these brands, I aim to provide my customers with high-quality products specifically designed for Black hair, while also contributing to the growth and visibility of Black entrepreneurs in the beauty space.
