I'm an above-knee amputee hiking the 22 mile Presidential Traverse on crutches for 3 reasons:
1. Positively impact the lives of people in the disability community.
2. Raise money for programs that directly serve people with disabilities.
3. To show what is possible for someone with a disability and inspire others to help their fellow man and woman.
My name is Dana Albrycht. I'm a lifelong amputee who grew up in Canton, CT and I've always had a passion for sports and helping others. I competed in the 1996 and 2000 Paralympics for swimming and I'm the Former world record holder for Fastest Marathon On Crutches (2007 NYC Marathon). I play wheelchair basketball and love hiking and the outdoors.
2020 has been an extremely difficult year, none more so than those in the disability community who have lost many of the adaptive programs and support systems that made us feel a part of society in a positive manner...with so much uncertainty and negativity in the world, I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to do something good for the disability community of which I am a part of.. I have always had a passion for helping others along with a love for the outdoors and hiking, so I decided to combine the two and do a GOFUNDME “hiking fundraiser” in order to raise money for programs that directly help individuals with disabilities....my aim is to inspire others to help their fellow man and woman...I am not the type of person to ask for anything, and not everyone is in a position to help, but if you are able to support this cause, both myself and the programs I am raising the funds for would be forever grateful...this is an opportunity to truly help improve the lives of individuals in the disability community who could use our help
With the money raised, we will have the ability to give back and directly impact the lives of individuals in the disability community through a variety of local and regional disability programs. All donations will be divided among the following organizations and programs that directly serve the disability community: The Hospital for Special Care Adaptive Sports Program, Children and Teens Living with a Disability Mentorship Program, New England Disabled Sports, and True Adaptive LLC.
The Presidential Traverse is the longest, most difficult alpine ridge hike this side of the Mississippi! It is composed of Eight 4000' Peaks in the White Mountains of New Hampshire including the tallest mountain in New England, Mount Washington (6288'). My hope is to show others what an individual with a disability is capable of accomplishing, and inspire others to help their fellow man and woman reach their own personal goals.
I will begin my hike on crutches of the Presidential Traverse on September 20, 2020 and will finish on September 21, 2020. My hope is to inspire you enough to give to this amazing cause, and together we can make the world a better place. Thank you!
