Preserving Space History: The Untold Story of CubeSat

We are thrilled to share our non-profit project dedicated to chronicling the history of CubeSat—the groundbreaking miniature satellite standard that has revolutionized space exploration. Led by Prof. Robert "Bob" Twiggs, the CubeSat’s co-inventor, and a dedicated team of his students and colleagues, we are on a mission to capture the captivating human stories behind the creation of this game-changing technology. While technical accounts abound, our focus lies on telling the human side of the story—the triumphs, setbacks, and personal journeys of the visionaries who propelled CubeSats into a global industry-shaping success.

Project Overview:

“The CubeSat History Project" aims to produce a nonfiction book documenting the history of the CubeSat Standard's creation, adoption, and impact. In addition, we will create a companion image book showcasing the stunning and unique visuals from this era of space exploration.

This is no story of the billionaire's space race. Learn how a group of ambitious teachers, students and scientists fundamentally changed the space industry and created a new generation of space explorers. Read about the determination, creativity, and ingenuity that propelled these tiny satellites into the cosmos, work that proved these little “curiosities” were, in fact, formidable tools for scientific and technological advancement.

Why This Matters:

The CubeSat is more than just a technology standard. It embodies the spirit of innovation that drives the space industry forward. By documenting its history, we honor the pioneers whose dedication paved the way for educational spacecraft in the USA.

Proceeds from the book's printing will be channeled back into educational space programs, ensuring that future generations can access the tools and knowledge needed to explore the cosmos.

Progress So Far:

We've made significant strides in our research efforts, compiling documents and images from government, industry, and academia. With over a hundred interviews from the founders of new space companies to senior engineers and executives at traditional aerospace firms and government agencies, we have gathered firsthand accounts that paint a comprehensive picture of the earliest CubeSat programs.
