Alex&Bryce's Fight Against DMD
Donation protected
Brothers Alex and Bryce were diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in August of 2012. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic, degenerative, and terminal muscle disease where their muscles will gradually weaken and cease to function over time. The progressive muscle weakness leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. It is an X-linked disorder so it typically affects mainly boys. Those with DMD are typically in a wheelchair by age 7-12 with an average life expectancy of 20-30 years. There is no cure.
Despite their diagnosis, both are still typical little boys. Alex, now age 7, loves superheroes and playing with Legos. Bryce, now age 4, enjoys playing with play-doh and doing puzzles. They are both imaginative, kind-hearted boys that are wonderful big brothers to their new baby sister, Aubrey.
Having two children with DMD takes not only an emotional toll on the family, but is a financial burden as well. Their parents, Tommy and Jenna, found one of the best DMD clinics in the US at Cincinnati Children’s hospital, but it is costly to travel there from Kansas City. The family also attends the local MDA clinic at KU Med and both boys see numerous specialists at each clinic; neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, physical therapy, etc. The boys take a type of steroid for their DMD that is not available in the US and therefore not covered by insurance and which they pay for out of pocket as well.
The family will continue to have financial needs for many years. Currently they are hoping to purchase a mobility scooter for Alex to use at school and home. Eventually they will need to purchase wheelchairs and other related equipment for both boys, a handicapped accessible vehicle, and one day a fully accessible home.
Many people have come forward to express their support and have asked what they can do to help. If you are able to give any amount, no matter how big or small, the good it will do for Alex and Bryce and their family is immeasurable. All donations will be used to offset medical expenses and ensure that the family can continue to do as much as they can for the boys. Thank you, in advance, for your donation, and please continue to pray for Alex and Bryce and their family.
