Cultivating 100 acres of organic farmland

PCIFDC (Pamoja Community Investment Fund Development Cooperative), is our not-for-profit organization. We recently embarked on an initiative to do our part in eradicating food insecurity, promoting holistic farming, and creating agricultural partnerships, and safe spaces for the Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) community. To accomplish this we have purchased 100 acres of organic farmland in Kawartha Lakes Ontario, and have initiated a community project called: “Pamoja Farms”.
The word Pamoja (pah-mo-jah) means “togetherness”, our motto is “we are stronger together”.
We plan to create a holistic agricultural oasis, where our community can 1. Learn about all facets of farming; 2. Participate in sowing, harvesting and distribution of farm produce; 3. Retreat for the improvement of interpersonal bonds and mental health; 4. Develop eco-friendly organic agricultural systems; 5. Provide food for our community and province at large; 6. Lastly, educate our community about farming and its importance to our evolving ecosystems.
Statistically, people of colour are seldom engaged in agriculture, in fact, only 3% of farmers in Canada are from racialized groups, which may contribute to the fact that over 25% of the general BIPOC community is reported as food insecure. To change this narrative, Pamoja Farms was formed, and we purchased 100 acres as a show of faith that we are dedicated to changing the narrative of people of colour in the agricultural space. We are determined to satisfy the need for diversity in the realm of farming and food equity.
Pamoja Farms is currently embarking on the following projects:
Land clearing and sowing: Cultivating cultural and popular local foods through greenhouse and direct ground planting and harvesting. We have been blessed to purchase organic land that has not been sprayed or contaminated with harsh chemicals, it is our goal to maintain this quality by planting organic seeds, fruit shrubs and trees to grow food that can add value to our community and Ontario as a whole.
Building a retreat house: Creating a space for retreat and education, where the greater Ontario community can stay, visit, learn and grow. We are building a 1500-2000+ square foot dwelling where our community can stay, nurture and be nurtured by nature and connect with the peace and serenity provided by Kawartha Lakes rural environment.
Education: We are currently hiring a local farmer to educate us on running a holistic agricultural business with a focus on community and locally grown and consumed foods. We plan to then share this information with our greater community in future farm retreats and workshops.
Pamoja Farms isn’t just a farming project, it is the avenue for people of colour to find their place in cultivating the source of our existence, it is an opportunity to create change in the way that our communities interact with nature, and create a legacy for the next generation to be proud of. We want to invite you to be a part of this amazing opportunity. No amount is too small, please help us on this journey of opportunity and progress by donating today.
