Cultural Exchange to Switzerland and Kenya!

Donation protected

Hello! My name is Nora Larson, and I am a 2023 IFYE Representative from North Dakota. Mid-June I will be setting off to Switzerland and Kenya for a combined total of 6 months! I am thrilled to have this opportunity to explore agri-culture in a new way!

Agri: My roots are rural. I grew up on a Farm/Ranch with small grain crops, Sim-Angus cattle, a dog or two, and a smattering of chickens. Through the IFYE program, I have the opportunity to learn what part Agriculture plays on a global scale!

Culture: Support local _____. Agriculture is much more than plants and cows. It takes people. Farmers and Ranchers do the important work to grow food for our tables and fiber for our clothing. Rural folk have a knack for using what’s on hand to solve problems with finesse. Country creativity can also show itself in artsy endeavors; cowboy poets, fiber arts, painting, theater, and music. It all adds up to a rich culture unique in its essence.

I look forward to experiencing the differences and similarities of agri-culture across the world!

What is IFYE?
The IFYE Association of the USA, Inc. (also known as the “International Farm Youth Exchange”) conducts exchange programs to promote global awareness among young people in the Ag industry. The IFYE Exchange Program was founded after World War II as young people perceived a need for greater international understanding and cooperation. IFYE provides the participant with leadership development opportunities that will enhance his/her capacity to have a major positive impact as a citizen of the USA and the world. The IFYE and the host family learn about each other’s culture and daily lives by participating in the host family’s daily life promoting “Peace Through Understanding.”

If you are local to the Lemmon area you may have met Inbound International IFYEs hosted by The Petik and Nordby families. I will be living with roughly 6-8 host families in agricultural areas of Switzerland and Kenya.

My Host Countries:

Switzerland:
  • Capital city: Bern
  • Swiss cheese originated in the area around Emmental, Switzerland.
  • The Swiss speak: English, Italian, French, Romansh, and Swiss German - It just depends on the region!
  • Common crops: wheat, barley, oats, lavender, as well as fruits including; cherries, peaches, and kiwifruits.
  • Types of Livestock operations: cows, pigs, goats, sheep, alpacas, and water buffalo.

Kenya:
  • Capital city: Nairobi
  • Kenya was a British colony between 1901-1960, they are now a self-governing republic.
  • Kenyans speak: English, and Swahili
  • Common crops: maize, wheat, rice, potatoes, tea, and coffee.
  • Types of livestock: cattle, goats, camels, sheep, poultry, rabbits, and bees.

What will I be doing?
While an active IFYE participant I will be learning local Ag practices from host families, experiencing Extension/4-H equivalents, living totally culturally immersed, and sharing my NoDak story!

This is an experience I have looked forward to for several years! The first year I applied was 2020. As we all know international travel has had its challenges in the last few years. With my background in Ag, rural living, and a degree in Tourism-Hospitality Management I see this as a career and personal development opportunity! I hope to be back in the Dakotas working in the Agritourism related field one day.

The IFYE Association donors and alumni cover 85% of the program's travel-related costs. This fundraiser assists with the remaining cost of the program. Backpacks, medical prep, appropriate clothing, and travel gear are all additional personal expenses. Donations of any size are appreciated!

One thing that drew me to the IFYE program was the aspect of family/community life. Sure you can travel on your own but how much more joyful to share your experiences with others! You can join me on the journey and follow me @neitherhere_nora_there on Instagram and Facebook. I appreciate all the kind words, excitement, financial, prayer, and moral support generously shared throughout the months leading up to departure!
