Cunningham's Fight Against Cancer (GBM)

Ian’s story begins on December 23, 2019. That day, he had a raging headache that was worse than anything he had ever suffered. Then it went away. 5 days later, Ian had a massive seizure at home, witnessed by his two little daughters who ran to another room to get Kathleen, his wife, their mother. Together they called 911. Ian suffered another massive seizure before help arrived, then two more in the ambulance on the way to hospital. At the hospital the seizures wouldn’t stop and Ian was put into a drug-induced coma for 6 days. During this time massive amounts of medications were used to finally stop the seizures. Miraculously, he left hospital 3 days later with only a “shadow” on his brain showing on the MRI. Subsequently the MRI in February 2020 suggested an anomaly but nothing more. Ian began a slow return to the work he loves: accounting technician for a rehabilitation company. Then, another MRI in April told a different story, the shadow had quickly grown into an “aggressive tumour”. Ian left work to spend as much time as he could with his wife, children, family and friends before the surgery. Time that was needed to come to grips with the possibility of losing speech and right side function. The brain surgery on May 20 removed as much of the tumor as possible. On May 28th, Ian and Kathleen, received the phone call with the pathology results from the Doctor. The tumour is a stage 4 glioblastoma.

Ian is now resting at home. His life has been turned upside down. He has to make some very hard decisions. One decision that wasn’t hard to make, though, was whether to undergo radiation and chemotherapy to slow the progress of this very aggressive cancer. Without treatment, glioblastoma can be lethal in just a few months. Radiation treatment begins June 24, 2020 in Kelowna and is 6 weeks long. Chemotherapy (by pill) begins shortly thereafter.

This GoFundMe site is dedicated to raising funds to help pay for Ian’s accommodation during radiation and the incidentals that make his life easier going forward. He and Kathleen will be staying at Siesta Suites, an amazing facility that has specific protocols for cancer patients. In fact, 80% of their guests are there for long-term cancer treatment; they know what Ian will need.

If you can contribute monetarily, please do; every little bit helps. If you cannot contribute in this way, please keep Ian and his girls; Kathleen, Autumn and Elwynn, in your thoughts and prayers. Much love to all…
