Our Sawyer Story!
As most of you know Tommy and I have longed for a baby. We prayed for years finally just telling God whatever his plan is we are ok with. We trust him. So finding out last March I was pregnant was a huge shock but also the best day ever! You think of how having a baby will be and all the excitement that comes with a baby. Never do you expect a sick baby. From the day Sawyer was born we have had nothing but issues. He was born with lazy face muscles. So one side of his face doesn’t draw down when he cry’s. He also has always thrown up most if not all of his feedings. He was also born with a bad case of jaundice. So for the first whole week every day we traveled to Camden Clark for regular blood work with levels only dropping a tad. He went from 7.5 to 6.15 in just days. He wasn’t gaining it back either. A week and a half into him being home I suddenly became very sick. My husband rushed me to the ER when after 2 days I was diagnosed with Ecoli from delivery. I spent 5 days in Marietta hospital on the strongest antibiotics they had to give. So after discharge Sawyer was still throwing up all his feedings in large amounts. He had also developed a very bad rash on his face. They scheduled a lot of blood work and urin test to see what could be wrong with him. We made 3 visits to the pediatrician about the puking and rash. They treated the rash and diagnosed him as failure to thrive. At the last appointment the pediatrician said he wasn’t but just back to birth weight. They listed to his chest and found a heart murmur. They immediately scheduled him for an echocardiogram and X-rays to check on his heart. That’s where they found the VSD ventricular septal defect. It’s where the blood in the lower chambers go to the lungs back to the heart then back to the lungs not to the rest of his body like it should. Eating a bottle for him is the equivalent of running a marathon. He sweats can’t stay awake and won’t eat more than 1.5 oz a feeding at over a month old. They said depending on the size of the hold depends on if he needs surgery. However he was too small for them to attempt surgery. After a long consultation with a pediatric cardiologist we were sent home on several medications to treat all of his symptoms including the vomiting to try and help him gain weight and see if the hole would close. Fast forward to this past week he started struggling to breathe as with the condition the fluid backs up in your lungs and without proper treatment will start shutting down all major organs. So we decided to take him to the pediatric ER in belpre. When they diagnosed him with Covid. Where he was then life flighted to Akron children’s hospital where we currently are. He was on oxygen small amount of fluids to combat the vomiting and stay hydrated. They then started 2 medications to treat the Covid. While up here they wanted to be sure the VSD was not contributing to the current issues. So they ordered another echocardiogram. Where after they looked for 2 hours on the scan they found a hole in the top of his heart as well. The doctors then told us that because of the size of the bottom hole he will ultimately need open heart surgery which is a major surgery for him. They said it’s just a matter of when they can do it. They said since he has Covid they have to wait several weeks to be able to see if they can sedate him for the surgery. I originally only
Took off till March for work however I’m not sure about returning or what we might do I can not leave Sawyer in this condition with any body and Tommy is running out of days off. However we both need to work for the income. We are just praying God directs us where to go from here with Sawyer and our lives. We want to thank everyone who has prayed for our little boy and family and who has made any kind of donation or has offered to help us in anyway. The out poor of love has been amazing. We are very blessed with an amazing group of people in our corner. We can’t thank everyone enough. We love to help so it’s hard for us to accept we need help. Our little boy is everything to us. I’ve tried to individually thank everyone and if I missed you I am so very sorry. Please continue to pray for us as taking care of a very sick baby is very stressful. We know we serve and awesome God and our babies healing is coming! Again thank everybody so very much for everything.
