Back in the Groove

Hello everyone—and welcome! We are the School of HONK!
This past year, we’ve found a new groove, making our joyful noise in ways that keep our community connected and safe. In both new and familiar spaces – islands and forests, museums and trolleys, porchfests and honkfests – we returned to some of our favorite traditions:
- For our first full-scale Summer HONK since the pandemic, middle schoolers and mentors crashed the Green Line as well as coffee shops, markets, and other local haunts. And, we brought a new favorite tune to our song book.
- We also enjoyed our second-ever community retreat at the beautiful Hale Reservation, a free, weekend-long opportunity for our members to gather with friends and family, and with horns and drums, playing and connecting with each other in ways deeper than we can at Sunday sessions.
- And, we celebrated October with HONK!, PRONK!, our Monster Mash dance party, and our Halloween blinky light parade, where we braved a “spider apocalypse” full of candy, decorations, and kids in costumes.
In this new groove, we welcomed more newcomers than we have in years, keeping our sound fresh and our hearts open to new friends. We introduced people of all ages to the thrill of playing an instrument for the first time. At the same time, we've seen long-term members developing their skills in technique, improvisation, and spectacle, and mentors developing their leadership skills, all while keeping it fun for everyone.
We have high hopes for 2024: learning new songs, performing in new neighborhoods, improving how we learn and teach together, continuing to welcome new players into our band community, and of course, a big birthday party for OUR TENTH ANNIVERSARY!. But we can’t make these plans a reality without some help to cover our rising costs, including insurance, space rentals, van maintenance, and instrument repairs. With your help, we can keep our groove grooving and make the most of the year to come.
