Cycling across Great Britain for a better planet

In April '22 I will set out on a solo cycling journey across the English continent in just 10 days on my gravel bike. The total route is 1,882 kilometers, more than 18,000 vertical meters and has 250 kilometers of gravel. I'll start from Land's End in Cornwall finishing in John O' Groats in Scotland. I'm riding to raise money for the Amazon, the lungs of our planet. The money will be donated in full to the World Wide Fund for Nature.

 

About me

For years I have been enjoying (road) cycling. What once started as an alternative to rowing grew into a fanatical hobby. The combination of freedom and being outdoors is inspiring to me. In the middle of nature, preferably before dawn, the wind and rain in your face, is a fantastic feeling. In recent years, cycling has taken on extreme proportions. As a result, I cycle more than 10,000 kilometers a year, mainly in the Netherlands. This year I bought a new (gravel) bike, with which I want to cycle more often outside typical roads throughout The Netherlands. This will be my first big adventure on the new bike and I'd like you to join me in my quest to raise money & awareness for the Amazon via the World Wide Fund for Nature.

 

 

 

Cycling across the United Kingdom is a long-cherished wish. By car it can be done 'simple and fast' in approximately 1340 kilometers. I added more than 500 kilometers, and will ride via the most beautiful roads from southwest England to the north of Scotland. Let's see if that’s possible within 10 days.

 

And why not immediately raise money for nature, which plays such a major role in cycling. Without nature and oxygen, cycling is less fun or even impossible. I have chosen to raise money for the Amazon. I’m aiming to collect €5,000 altogether.

 

The Amazon is burning!

With an area of ​​6.7 million square kilometers, the Amazon is the largest jungle in the world. About 10% of all plant and animal species worldwide live in this special region, which covers nine countries. The Amazon river is nearly 7,000 kilometers long and contains the largest number of freshwater fish species in the world. There are also about 35 million people who depend on the area for food, raw materials and water.

 

Unfortunately, the Amazon region is hit by forest fires every year. In recent years, increasingly devastating: tens of thousands of square kilometers of forest went up in flames. A large part of these fires are not caused by natural causes, but are ignited. To make land suitable for livestock and agriculture, areas of forest and savanna are set on fire. These fires can quickly increase in number and intensity due to drought and high winds. Then they are almost impossible to extinguish. WWF is committed to the Amazon, with the goal of ending deforestation in the Amazon by 2030.

Samenvatting

In april (2022) rij ik op de racefiets in 10 dagen solo het Engelse continent door: van Land’s End in Cornwall naar John O’ Groats in Schotland. De totale route is 1882 kilometer, meer dan 18.000 hoogtemeters en is deels onverhard. Ik rij om geld in te zamelen voor de Amazone, de longen van onze planeet. Het geld zal volledig gedoneerd worden aan het Wereld Natuur Fonds.

 

Over mij

Al jaren haal ik veel plezier uit het (race)fietsen. Wat ooit begon als een alternatief voor het roeien groeide uit tot een fanatieke hobby. De combinatie van vrijheid en buiten zijn is geweldig. Midden in de natuur, liefst voor dag en dauw, de wind en regen in het gezicht, is een fantastisch gevoel. In de afgelopen jaren heeft het fietsen steeds extremere proporties aangenomen. Met als gevolg dat ik jaarlijks meer dan 10.000 kilometer fiets, voornamelijk in Nederland. Dit jaar kocht ik een nieuwe fiets (gravelbike), waarmee ik meer naar en in het buitenland wil fietsen. Dit wordt mijn eerste grote avontuur op de nieuwe fiets.

 

 

Dat ik het Verenigd Koninkrijk wil doorfietsen in 10 dagen is een lang gekoesterde wens. Met de auto kan het ‘eenvoudig en snel’ in circa 1340 kilometer. Ik heb er ruim 500 kilometer aan vast geplakt, en rij via de mooiste weggetjes van zuidwest Engeland naar het noorden van Schotland. Eens kijken of dat lukt.

 

En waarom dan niet gelijk geld ophalen voor de natuur, die zo’n grote rol speelt bij het fietsen. Zonder natuur en zuurstof is het fietsen minder leuk of zelfs onmogelijk. Ik heb gekozen geld op te halen voor de Amazone. Ik wil proberen €5.000 bij elkaar te fietsen.

 

De Amazone gaat kapot!

Met een oppervlakte van 6,7 miljoen km2 is de Amazone de grootste nog overgebleven jungle ter wereld. Ongeveer 10% van alle planten- en diersoorten wereldwijd leeft in deze bijzondere regio, die negen landen beslaat. De Amazonerivier is bijna 7.000 kilometer lang en bevat het grootste aantal soorten zoetwatervissen ter wereld. Ook wonen er zo’n 35 miljoen mensen die afhankelijk zijn van het gebied voor voedsel, grondstoffen en water.

 

Helaas wordt het Amazonegebied ieder jaar getroffen door bosbranden. De laatste jaren steeds vaker allesvernietigend: tienduizenden vierkante kilometers woud gingen in vlammen op. Een groot deel van deze branden ontstaat niet door natuurlijke oorzaken, maar wordt aangestoken. Om grond geschikt te maken voor veeteelt en landbouw, worden stukken bos en savanne in brand gestoken. Deze branden kunnen snel in aantal en intensiteit toenemen door droogte en harde wind. Dan zijn ze bijna niet te blussen. WWF zet zich in voor de Amazone, met als doel dat in 2030 de ontbossing in de Amazone is gestopt.
