Beira Orphanage - Cyclone Idai Emergency Appeal

Donation protected
Hi All,

My name is Guy de Miranda and I am from Beira - Mozambique and currently living in London. I have lived most of my life in Mozambique and my family and many friends are still based there.

I am reaching out to you to raise funds for Beira Orphanage, which is a key shelter for children and babies in need of a home.

Beira was recently devastated by a cyclone that has damaged over 90% of the city's infrastructure. It is expected that the city will be without power for many weeks. Product prices, fuel and water have increased significantly in the past days as well.

The next weeks are critical for the region, where flooded areas see a spike in Malaria, Cholera and other water born diseases.

I am raising funds to tackle key issues currently being faced - a lack of clean water, power, food and essentials which are vital to support the many children that are now seeking shelter in this institution.

The aim is to send the funds directly to the orphanage and give the much needed, immediate support to those most affected by this disaster.

This reaches an institution dedicated to ensuring that the children's lives are safeguarded. Equally important, I am confident that this is a reliable channel of help where the funds will be used as efficiently as possible.

The team at the Orphanage are experienced and dedicated and I have had the chance to work with them personally. I pledge for their commitment to helping those in need.

Your support in this cause would mean a world of difference for this institution and the people they are helping for the weeks and months ahead.

Please do not hesitate in reaching out if you have any questions or want to help further.

Internet and Mobile providers have been down for the past days in Beira, once re-established, I will keep this page updated with more info on the orphanage.

BACKGROUND:

In the past 5 days, Cyclone Idai has ravaged parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in what the UN says could be the worst weather-related disaster ever to hit the southern hemisphere.

Millions of people were in the direct path of the cyclone, with the port city of Beira in Mozambique bearing the brunt.

Beira city is Mozambique's 4th largest city and located in the central region, where one of Mozambique's largest rivers flows to the ocean. It is a city below sea level and exposed to the Dam's water discharges coming from Zimbabwe.

So far there have been 200 deaths reported but it is suspected that this figure is actually closer to 1000 lives. Many families lost their homes, many are still stuck on house roofs or tree branches and are still awaiting rescue.
