Cydni's Barista Competition

I'm trying to qualify for the U.S Coffee Championships Barista Competition in Nashville, Tenn. This is a unique opportunity for me, one where I can showcase my passion, commitment, and skills as a barista in a room full of my peers––in short, in front of all my heroes and sheroes.

Let me tell you a little more about why I want ––why I need––to be in the room where it happens. Coffee is my medium––my innermost form of expression––where I can live out my purpose. I'm in it for the long haul. Coffee is not just bean water. It's not simple consumption. It extracts creativity. It fosters human relations and communities. Coffee passes through a lot of people's hands, requiring a great deal of attention and care. I am fortunate that I can smell it, grind it, brew it, taste it––engage in a full sensory experience and share that ideal of a harmonious experience through coffee.

Coffee's intensity also mirrors  life's intensity. The method and the practice of coffee brings out sweetness, bitterness: it's memorable and it's moving.

I can only expand on my craft by going to this event. But this is more to me than a competition. It's an occasion where I will be in a room with like-minded individuals who share similar goals. I will be in a "university" setting, if you will, in a "classroom" where baristas learn from one another and are all excited about one thing: coffee.
