Help us build a school and shelter for Bali’s Street Kids

Bali Street Mums & Kids Project is a small non-profit organization that provides a Safe House, schooling and medical aid for impoverished mothers and children rescued from trafficking, abuse and child labor in Bali.

The Safe House is located in Denpasar and currently provides a refuge and home for 40 children, 6 babies and 15 mothers.

The children and single mothers come from extremely poor and in most cases abusive living circumstances and are found begging on the streets in tourist areas in the south, before being rescued by Bali Street Mums and Kids Project.

Begging is very dangerous and many children are being kidnapped from the streets, trafficked and abused every year in Bali. Bali Street Mums and Kids Project rescue children from horrific circumstances and it is these children that live at the Safe House, where they receive care, counselling, schooling and safety.

The organization also provides meals and care for the children who live in the slums and around the rubbish dump in Denpasar. Many of these children's parents lost their jobs last April due to the COVID crisis. These children are often suffering from malnutrition and other illnesses. Every morning more than 60 children from the slum areas come to the Safe House and receive a nutritious breakfast as well as medical care if needed.

Bali Street Mums Project also provides training and work skills to the mothers so that they can earn an alternative income to support their children and become self-sufficient. Many of the mothers have themselves been abused and trafficked in the past.

Below are a couple of stories of the children living at the Safe House:

“Dewi and Missi were begging on the busy street, Sunset Road, at 11 pm when we first met them. Dewi was just 2 years old and Missi was 6 years old. The little girls were running in and out of traffic lights, going up to stopped cars and begging for money. When we found them, both Dewi and her sister had a high fever, lung infections and skin disease. They now live at the Safe House together with their mother. They love to play and are happy to sleep in beds for the first time in their little lives.”

“Nadia is 13 years old. She was raped and trafficked for 3 years. Nadia was rescued from a locked bathroom in a hotel room after she was found by the hotel staff. Nadia's mother disappeared when Nadia was only nine years old. Relatives then sold Nadia to a gang of sex traffickers.” Nadia now lives at the Safe House where she is receiving counselling, education, care and protection.

“Kadek was sold at the age of nine, for slave labor. He was put to work on a building site carrying rocks in the hot sun, 10 hours a day. In return his father was paid 40,000 rupiah a day ($3). At night he was locked in a cage.” Bali Street Mums Project rescued Kadek and he now lives at the Safe House with mother and younger brother and sister.

The Safe House is now getting overcrowded because of the growing number of children and mothers who are in need. Therefore Bali Street Mums and Kids Project would like your help to fund the construction of a classroom and sleeping area for the new children and mothers seeking refuge and shelter. We are a small team of volonters that are fundraising to turn the garage of the Safe House into a multi purpose classroom and shelter. Please be a part of this project and help us change the lives of these children and mothers.
