Nathan and a group of guys were out snowmachining (snowmobiling to non-Alaskans) at Summit Lake, Alaska. Partway through the day, the visibility decreased to white-out conditions and Nathan plunged over a 20+ foot drop-off he couldn't see.
The machine landed on his head and compressed his head to his chest so he couldn't breathe. He was able to push the machine off him, but had intense neck pain-- it was clear he was badly injured.
Those who were with him called 911 and did their best to keep him warm and immobile until EMS could arrive and transport him to the ambulance with a sled/snowmachine. From the time of injury until being loaded onto the ambulance, he had lain out in the snow/cold for 4 hours.
At the hospital, Nathan learned that he had broken his "atlas," his C-1 vertebrate, in 2 places. The doctors and physical therapists said that injury is most often fatal-- but Nathan beat the odds.
He did not need surgery and was discharged with a supportive collar-- he is expected to heal on his own. Recovery time is expected to be 3+ months.
Nathan and his wife Laura appreciate all prayers: for a full recovery, for continued insurance coverage, and for provision during the long rehab time.
For those who feel led to contribute financially, any support we can raise will go toward paying medical bills and supporting the family while Nathan is unable to work.
