“Well, everyone’s gonna have to get along and that’s that.”
That’s the sort of no-nonsense wisdom that people close to Tom Sanger are used to hearing from him for so many years. After several years as a young man playing music professionally in various regional bands, he dedicated himself to a career working with addicts and the mentally ill at Western State Hospital, in Staunton VA. Beginning in the early 1970s, he served the patients there for 34 years. Along the way, he gave nearly a decade volunteering with Shenan-arts Teen Theatre, a local non-profit community theatre, stage managing productions such as Black Elk Speaks, and Pink Floyd's “The Wall.”
In 2020, after fully self-quarantining at home for over 6 months (to stay safe and keep others safe from Covid-19), Tom started to feel ill, and the illness kept getting worse. His first time going anywhere during that time was to the doctor in early October, and then to the emergency room the next day, where he was admitted immediately. He was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma and began chemotherapy immediately.
His condition has improved, with some ups and downs over these last 5 months of treatment. His doctors, however, have discovered Lymphoma cells in his spinal fluid, which has necessitated a separate series of treatments at UVA (these are riskier and require 5 days of inpatient care). He is scheduled for another of these treatments starting April 19th.
Even with insurance, the associated costs and co-pays for treatments and hospital stays have depleted Tom’s savings. He is retired and on a fixed income. Complicating things further, his vehicle died just before he became ill, and it is beyond repair. We hope to alleviate his financial stress, so his focus can remain where it belongs: on beating this cancer, and spending many more years with his five grandchildren, two sons, his sisters, and his brother.
If you would like to assist with Tom Sanger’s financial burden, any donation through GoFundMe will be greatly appreciated. All funds received will go toward Tom’s medical expenses, and the purchase of a safe, reliable vehicle.
The Sanger Family appreciates your thoughts and prayers and continued support. Thank you for helping Tom beat cancer!
