My husband has asked me not to do this and if you’ve met him at all-you know he will always help but rarely ask. Luckily he married one stubborn woman…
To get to the point: Sergeant Matthew Reese was deployed to Iraq under Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003-2004. He suffered a back injury towards the end of his deployment. Upon return to the US he underwent chiropractic, physical therapy, and received injections in his back at Ft. Hood. At this point he was diagnosed with a dislocated SI joint. His back continued to plague him with pain, he fought back with copious amounts of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, injections, and steroids.
He deployed again to Iraq in 12/2005. During this deployment he began experiencing extreme lower back pain and sciatica symptoms down into his lower legs. On camp he continued physical therapy. Yet as a result of continued pain, he was flown to Baghdad to get a CT scan, which showed herniations in his lower back. He then received more injections to this area only to be back on active duty in three days. For 18 years he has been working with the VA to get treatment while suffering increased pain to the point where he cannot do anything physical. Due to continuing increasing pain he had an MRI which revealed a ruptured disc in his lower back. He was referred to a neurosurgeon locally who recommended that he get a disc replacement from a clinic in Germany called ONZ. However, this surgery costs $40,000 USD. Neither the VA or insurance will cover this cost. Despite the fact that it is a a result of his military service. Both the VA and the local Neurosurgeon will not perform the surgery. We have decided that our best and only option is to try and raise the funds for a full disc replacement of his S-1 at ONZ in Germany.
