Meet Aaron, my son. He is a proud father to a wonderful 6 year old boy. To say he is an incredible father would be an understatement. His life truly revolves around his son.
He has had 2 brain surgeries in the last few weeks….the first for an intercranial EEG…the second was an emergency surgery, as he seized so much that he stopped breathing and was rushed into surgery due to blood clots in his brain. He is scheduled for a third surgery in a few short weeks. The recovery will be an extensive process.
It all started in 2015. Aaron was a Junior at Ball state, striving for a degree in Criminology. On his way home one night he veered off the road across oncoming traffic and landed in a corn field. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he was practically unharmed. Shortly after, doctors discovered that he had epilepsy. It was a seizure that cause him to veer off the road. Over the last 5 years he has had several different doctors, MRI's, EEG’s and array of different medications in an attempt to control his seizures. After all the countless tests and medication changes the seizures still could not be controlled.
In 2018 doctors informed him that he may be a candidate for brain surgery. The brain surgery would remove the area of the brain causing the seizures. Although the idea of brain surgery was frightening, he was determined to have a calm, peaceful life for his son. He felt as if someone had pressed a pause button on his life, but this surgery was to be the key to unlock a sense of normalcy. Again, the testing was nonstop. More ‘EEGs, MRIs, as well as in-depth neurological testing. With his seizures being so unpredictable and uncontrolled with medication, and the tremendous amount of time in hospitals and doctors’ offices, his ability to work became nonexistent, although he never stopped trying. Realizing that his financial situation was not suited for the life he was trying to provide for his son, he humbly made the decision to apply for disability that same year. After over two years of back and forth, his disability was approved.
For a man with a young son to care for, living in someone else’s home can be disheartening, even when it is your family home. Aaron struggled with this immensely, not wanting to be a burden to others, and fighting with his own desire to provide. When his disability came through, he purchased an inexpensive house in need of repair. At first the repairs seemed minimal, but as time went on it came to light that the home needed extensive repair. The floors all have to be replaced due to old termite damage, the furnace is unrepairable, the hot water heater is shot, as well as some plumbing repairs. These repairs are far beyond what he can afford. He would love nothing more than to do his best to complete the projects himself but with limited means and heavy medical restrictions he has hit a dead end.
His only desire is to be able to provide his son the home he deserves. This is my sole reason for starting this fundraising campaign. In 5 years, he had the perseverance to finish his college degree, get married and divorced, endured an immense amount of medical testing and treatments and is now recovering from back to back brain surgeries with another on the way, all while being a full time Daddy. Epilepsy is a constant battle, a constant state of instability but he refuses to give up. He is truly a strong and determined young man fighting for a better life for his son and himself. He is feeling the weight of his illness now, he wants a suitable home for his son. This is incredibly hard to watch after seeing how many battles he has fought to get to this point.
Thank you for taking the time to read my son's story. Please donate if you are able, know that no amount is too small, and most importantly please SHARE this link on your own pages. Thank you and God Bless!
