Helping Daina

On 10th Nov 2012 Dainora found out that she had a brain tumour that required surgery. The 3cm tumour was discovered following an MRI scan. Dainora had been suffering from severe dizziness and nausea for 3-4 weeks prior to the MRI and had been bedridden for some of this time. The operation to remove the tumour took place on 19th Nov 2012 at Charring Cross Hospital in London under Dr. Peterson. The operation was very successful and removed more than 95% of the tumour. On 7th Dec 2012 we received the biopsy results which showed that the tumour was malignant and called Medulloblastoma. It arises from the brain tissue and is fast growing. It had probably been growing for a year or two. This type of tumour is extremely rare (2 in a million). It is more prevalent in young children and there are only about 50-100 cases in the UK. The cancer cells that cause this tumour rarely spread to other parts of the body. Dainora must recover from the surgery before the next stage of treatment begins. Once she has her muscle strength and balance back and she will be able to go home. She will then start a 6-week course of Radiotherapy. The Radiotherapy will attempt to kill the remaining cancer cells. Radiotherapy is likely to start late Jan/early Feb 2013. It maybe necessary to use Chemotherapy after the Radiotherapy. Following treatment Dainora should be able to return to her normal life and get back to work (expected March - May 2013).

The money raised here will help pay for travel expenses to and from hospital during Radiotherapy and for other things that Daina will need whilst getting better.
