Damian Haag recovery

My beloved nephew Damian experienced a traumatic rupture of an AVM causing bleeding in his brain this past Thursday evening. Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal tangles of arteries and veins that grow in the brain. They are unknown anomalies until they eventually rupture. Damian had a sudden severe headache and couldn't feel his right hand and quickly progressed to vomiting and losing consciousness. He was airlifted to the children's hospital where he is making strides every day under their care in the ICU. The bleeding has caused a loss of his ability to fully move his right side as well as effected the part of his brain that assists in speech and language. The neurosurgery team has planned for brain surgery in a few weeks to repair the vessels and an aggressive physical therapy rehab plan to regain his strength and the usage of his right side. All of you who have ever met Damian know how devoted he is and how hard this 13 year old boy works and lives for baseball and his teams We know this focus and determination will be the way he will come through this tragic situation and restore his body and brain function fully. But this journey has just begun and it will be a long and challenging recovery. I created this account to help take some of the burden off his parents as they will be right next to his bedside in the weeks coming up to surgery and the months after. I am heartbroken to find us here but so grateful that we are able to discuss an upcoming surgery. There are many families who have not had that chance for their child. AVMs can be fatal. They must be repaired or they will rupture again. The surgery will save his life, again.
