Dan & Marie Powell
Donation protected
On Friday March 16, 2020 Dan Powell was hospitalized for a sudden loss of mobility, dizziness and numbness in hands and legs. Doctors could not immediately pin point the cause of the symptoms but by the end of the weekend Dan could not walk, use his hands or even talk properly. Thankfully on Monday, March 19, 2020 the doctors found the problem! Dan was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare condition in which the bodies immune system attacks the nerves. We were so thankful to learn that the condition was recoverable and had about a 90% full recovery rate with little to no lasting conditions. As a family we rejoiced and were thankful, optimism filled the room, little did we know that the toughest part was still ahead of us.
Dan’s recovery would take 6 to 12 months, which would have to be done in-patient at a center. During this period, he would not be able to care for his wife Marie. In 2002 Marie was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and has been fighting a long and arduous battle with it for the past 18 years. She is currently confined to a chair with only limited use of one arm. She requires twenty-four-hour care and Dan provided this care with exception of using sitters while working or attending church functions. With dad’s recovery term, no income coming in and twenty-four hour care costing roughly $2,000.00 weekly some tough decisions had to be made.
The decision was made that Marie would go to a nursing home and once Dan completed physical therapy he would hopefully join her there. This was a very tough decision for them to make but one that was made with grace and understanding from both Dan & Marie. All of which come to a halt when the nursing home informed that they were not taking any new residents at the time due to the COVID-19. So for now Marie is forced to remain home and continue paying the $2,000.00 weekly care bill plus grocery and utility expenses for an undetermined amount of time. Financial aid is needed to help this loving couple until things can improve. We estimate a goal of $20,000.00 to cover care, medical needs and living expenses. Any donations will help and be greatly appreciated. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
Also for the ones that like to read, you can also help them by purchasing a copy of Maria's (Lillian) book she wrote, Against the Tide. It's a great read. Follow the link below to purchase her book.
