Dad is heading home for hospice care. My mother is his primary caregiver now. Any donations will now be put towards paying for supplemental private care so every now and then mom can take a break or sleep through the night.
On January 31, 2020, doctors gave dad a prognosis of 3 weeks to 3 months.
Any assistance is appreciated

My father Daniel Mullendore was diagnosed with stage four melanoma November 13. Initial imaging showed the cancer had metastasized spread throughout the lungs, liver, and spine. What began as pain he had for months in his leg and hip turned out to be related to a tumor that was causing inflammation and pressure on the nerves in his spine that went to his legs. The tumors also deteriorated the bone of his pelvis to the point that they were crumbling, collapsing on and pinching the nerves.
So the first step in treatment was to have neurosurgery to fuse his lower back vertebrae (L4-pelvis open fusion), provide structural support to his spine and pelvis, and remove some tumors on November 18. The hope is that afterwards, that the L5 nerve will be free from tumor pressure, that constant pain will be alleviated. It has to be approached as one step at a time.
My father has been the bread winner for my parents’ household the majority of their relationship (we are talking 54 years of marriage), and the impact of his diagnosis on them financially has yet to be felt. My parents and family are still reeling from the shock of his diagnosis. In two weeks he can begin radiation, and, depending upon pathology reports from his lung biopsy (remember, the cancer is there, too as well as his liver), immuno- and chemo- therapies. We are grateful he persisted in seeking medical assistance for the pain that led to this discovery.
My parents solely have social security at the moment since my father has not been earning any supplemental income since August. Some of the regular bills and utilities are past due and have late fees since he was too distracted with his physical condition to attend to them (regardless if he had the money to pay). Much of their income went towards medical needs and supplies associated with physical therapy prior to the cancer discovery.
They will need funding for transportation for my mother to and from the hospital or wherever my father may be placed (it’s predicted he will be in a rehabilitation facility after the initial recovery from his back surgery), as well as any medical bills this experience may incur in the future. Funding will also be needed to pay for any potential lifestyle changes this diagnosis will require to account for his care since my mother cannot be expected to manage it alone.
My parents have always been the kindest people I know and I learned a lot from them about humanity and the importance of lifting others up. They have given so much and so much of themselves to others. Please consider helping them up. Any financial stressors shouldn’t be their focus at this difficult time. I hope they can both put all their energy in his healing, recovery, and future treatment.
Thank you for your time and support is these amazing individuals whose love for others exceeds their love of themselves.
