Dan Koziol's Hope Fund

Hi, I’m Mark Raymond, and I created this GoFundMe for my friends, Dan and Susan Koziol, whose lives were upended by a tragic accident. Dan is on a long journey back from traumatic brain injury, with Susan at his side. Their story is one of hope and need.

If you had the opportunity to meet Dan before his accident, you’d immediately have been struck by his boundless energy and his cheerful demeanor. Dan was always thinking of others; and he and Susan were inseparable. On June 15, 2022, Dan and Susan were passengers in an open-air vehicle in Mexico when the driver lost control and hit a curb. Dan was thrown from the vehicle and suffered catastrophic head trauma. In the immediate aftermath, the doctors gave Dan only a 10% chance of surviving his injuries. That first horrible night, a third of Dan’s skull was removed to allow for swelling, and Dan was put in an induced coma. Susan remained at Dan’s side. Dan surprised his doctors and made it through the first night, and the next, and slowly his odds of survival improved. But the effects of his injuries would be life-altering.

Fast forward, past surgeries and setbacks… Susan has been Dan’s sole full-time caregiver since his discharge in August of 2022. Initially, Dan was fully reliant on Susan for medical care, personal hygiene, mobility, and tube feeding. His progress has been slow but encouraging. Today Dan can stand and walk on his own again. His brain injuries left him with aphasia and apraxia. As a result, his ability to communicate remains severely limited, and he frequently needs Susan’s help with simple tasks. Which brings us to this GoFundMe effort. Susan needs help covering medical bills and essentials, like rent, food, & supplies, until Dan is approved for disability payments.

Despite tragedy, Dan has retained his incredibly positive attitude. Together Susan and Dan celebrate every win, but Susan knows this will be a long journey.
