Dana & Preston Balmain's Hurricane Recovery

Our friend and sister, Dana Hern Balmain and husband Preston have been devastated by Hurricane Ian. Their home in Saint James City, Pine Island, FL was directly in the storm's path. The Balmain's home is concrete, but the roof blew off, and the storm surge flooded the lower level. Dana & Preston survived by going to a neighbor's house. Dana briefly told me about seeing other neighbors in lifejackets washing away.

Dana, Preston and their two cats were taken off of Pine Island from a rescue center by the National Guard on Friday, September 30th. They left with only their animals and the clothes they wore. Dana doesn't even have her glasses. The Balmain’s are thankful for the prayers everyone sent during the storm. Please continue praying for them and Florida in handling the aftermath of Ian!

Dana said the insurance companies are already giving them fits, denying the car rental, directed them to FEMA before starting the claim process, and the homeowners are fighting over who covers the bottom and upper levels. She thought it might take a year or so before work begins on homes.

Dana and Preston were able to rent a car to get to Booneville, MO where they are spending time with Dana’s parents to regroup and be their near friends and family. They are living day to day and are very grateful to be alive. They plan to return to Pine Island when it’s feasible to do so and help rebuild their community and home.

Pine Island was a paradise for Dana & Preston. They love boating, jet skiing, fishing from their pontoon boat, and socializing with their golf cart on the small island. They volunteered for many community support service organizations, where they made many friends, just like they did in Missouri, Kansas and Texas.

The funds we gather will go directly to Preston and Dana to help them get temporary housing, food, clothing and other expenses.
