After many discussions with family, Dana has reluctantly allowed us to reach out via gofundme so her many friends, family and her community that have been asking how they can help, can now do so!
Dana's story:
Dana Harper has been a nuclear technologist for 24 years, after graduation from Indiana University, Bloomington. She began her career employed with Indiana University and Riley Hospital, scanning oncology and tumor imaging for 9 years. Dana then began working at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital after having her first child Brock (so she could spend more time at home), and worked there for the last 15 years. Dana has performed 24 years of patient care and never imagined that she would become the patient.
Dana is 47 years old and has been a runner for 20 years. She has had regular mammograms and ultrasounds for years. In the summer of 2019 Dana started noticing some shortness of breath while running her typical 5 miles. In March 2020, she noticed a cough but no other symptoms. With COVID-19 just beginning to change the world, it was difficult to see her physician with a "COVID-19 symptom." There was also a fear of going to an urgent care facility that, at the time, was full of COVID-19 patients. This deterred her from getting in to be seen. In July 2020, Dana ultimately decided to visit an urgent care facility, which led to an X-ray and a pneumonia diagnosis. After 3 rounds of antibiotics, her X-ray remained unchanged. Dana was then sent to a pulmonologist (lung specialist) who did a CT scan and decided it looked like inflammation from an autoimmune disease or sarcoidosis. In October 2020, Dana was scheduled a bronchoscopy to obtain biopsies for the autoimmune disease. However, on November 4th the biopsies came back and Dana received the news that she in fact did NOT have an autoimmune disease - shockingly, Dana was diagnosed with estrogen positive, progesterone positive, and Her2 positive stage 4, metastatic breast cancer that had metastasized to her lungs. Soon after this diagnosis, which shook Dana and her family to the core, she tested positive for COVID-19. This delayed her scheduled chemotherapy for two weeks and finally on November 30th she received her first chemotherapy treatment.
Dana is starting this cancer journey with a positive mind-set and is ready to fight this battle! She is married to Neal Harper and they have two children, Brock 16 years old and Tatum 14 years old. They give her every reason to fight this battle to the best of her ability. With God's grace, peace, comfort and strength she is prepared to fight this battle, while continuing to be the best mom, wife and friend that she can continue to be. Dana continues to praise God for all of his blessings. This incredible challenge has allowed her the wisdom to not take anything for granted. Dana states, "Live Life, Love Others and Never. Take. Anything. For. Granted!"
*This fundraiser will be used for medical expenses and necessities while Dana's unable to work during her chemotherapy treatments and recovery.
