Daniel Infante was only 26 years old when his life was cruelly shattered by a bullet to the head during a protest in Venezuela.

Daniel Infante tenía solo 26 años cuando su vida fue cruelmente destrozada por una bala en la cabeza durante una protesta en Venezuela.

He survived, and as you can see from his smile, his soul shines just as beautifully now as it ever did.

Él sobrevivió, y como se puede ver por su sonrisa, su alma brilla tan bellamente como lo hizo alguna vez.

Daniel always loved to work, especially in service of others. Whatever he did he filled with love. He was, and is, a wonderful son, brother and uncle. Since our father’s death five years ago, Daniel was the only man among four women in our household, and he was truly our knight in shining armor. He was in his fifth semester of a business management degree program when his life took a tragic and unexpected turn.

A Daniel siempre le encantó trabajar, especialmente al servicio de los demás. Cualquier cosa que hiciese, lo llenaba de amor. Él era, y es, un maravilloso hijo, hermano y tío. Desde la muerte de nuestro padre hace cinco años, Daniel era el único hombre entre las cuatro mujeres de nuestra casa, y él era verdaderamente nuestro caballero de brillante armadura. Estaba en su quinto semestre para obtener su licenciatura en administración de empresas cuando su vida dio un giro trágico e inesperado.



The day it happened, April 24, 2017, Daniel and I were watching out the window, seeing from above the conflict between the pro-government groups and those of the opposition who were marching in the first national protest against the oppression of the regime. The pro-government militias were shooting at the protesters from higher up, making them run. At one point, after the opposition had been pushed back twice, there was a false calm, and at that time Daniel said he wanted to go downstairs and talk to some neighbors from our building. I said, “Don’t go! Stay here with me, and let’s just watch from here.” But he went down, and about ten minutes later I looked out the window… and was horrified to see Daniel lying face down on the pavement outside our building, not moving!

El día que sucedió, el 24 de abril de 2017, Daniel y yo estábamos mirando por la ventana, viendo desde arriba el conflicto entre los grupos pro gobierno y los de la oposición que marchaban en la primera protesta nacional contra la opresión del régimen. Las milicias pro gobierno disparaban en contra  de las personas de la oposición, haciendo que corrieran. En un momento dado, después de que la oposición había sido repelida dos veces, hubo una falsa calma, y en ese momento Daniel dijo que quería bajar y hablar con algunos vecinos del edificio. Yo le respondí, “No bajes! Quédate aquí y mira como está todo afuera…” , pero Daniel decidió bajar. Estábamos esperando que él volviera, pero diez minutos después miré por la ventana ... y me horroricé al ver a Daniel tirado boca abajo en el pavimento fuera de nuestro edificio, ¡sin moverse!

I ran down, but heard shots again being fired, so could not go into the street, lest I also get shot. Finally, during a lull in the firing, I went running out and knelt by Daniel, who was unconscious and bleeding from a head wound, but thank God still alive. We took him to the emergency room of the hospital, which was in utter chaos, as many protesters had been wounded. Daniel went into surgery at 7 p.m. and came out at 2:30 a.m. They removed part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain, but were unable to remove the bullet, which is still lodged deep within his cerebral tissues.

Bajé corriendo, pero escuché que empezaban a disparar nuevamente, por lo que no podía salir a la calle, para que tampoco me dispararan. Finalmente, durante una pausa en el tiroteo, salí corriendo y me arrodillé junto a Daniel, que estaba inconsciente y sangrando por una herida en la cabeza, pero gracias a Dios todavía vivo. Lo llevamos a la sala de emergencias del hospital, que estaba en completo caos, ya que muchos manifestantes habían resultado heridos. Daniel ingresó a cirugía a las 7 p.m. y salieron a las 2:30 a.m. Le quitaron parte de su cráneo para aliviar la presión sobre su cerebro, pero no pudieron extraer la bala, que todavía está alojada en lo profundo de sus tejidos cerebrales.


He spent almost 3 months in the ICU, where he survived a dangerous case of pneumonia. We didn’t know how much neurological damage had been done, or how many abilities could be recovered, but as it stands now he cannot move or speak, although it is clear that he understands all that is going on around him. And the love and joy he radiates, despite his condition, is a blessing and an inspiration for all of us.

Pasó casi 3 meses en la UCI, donde sobrevivió a un caso grave de neumonía. No sabíamos cuánto daño neurológico se había hecho o cuántas habilidades se podían recuperar, pero tal como está ahora no puede moverse ni hablar, aunque está claro que comprende todo lo que sucede a su alrededor. Y el amor y la alegría que irradia, a pesar de su condición, es una bendición y una inspiración para todos nosotros.

The financial cost of caring for Daniel is huge. In the beginning we received many donations, for which we were very grateful, but now the donations are minimal, and just the diapers Daniel needs each day cost about Bs. 70,000,000 ($20), and astronomical amount for Venezuelans. Due to the economic collapse here, the inflation rate is incredibly high, and everything is absurdly expensive. The physical therapy treatments Daniel needs are really beyond our means.  We want very much to take him to a high quality rehabilitation center, so he may have the chance to recover his ability to move and speak. But at this point there is no way we cannot afford it.

El costo financiero para cuidar a Daniel es enorme. Al principio recibimos muchas donaciones, por lo que estábamos muy agradecidos, pero ahora las donaciones son mínimas, y solo los pañales que Daniel necesita diariamente cuestan Bs. 70.000.000 (aproximadamente $ 20), es una cantidad astronómica tanto para nosotros como para cualquier venezolano. Debido al colapso económico venezolano, la tasa de inflación es increíblemente alta, y todo es absurdamente caro. Los tratamientos de terapia física que Daniel necesita están realmente más allá de nuestras posibilidades. Queremos mucho llevarlo a un centro de rehabilitación de alta calidad, para que tenga la oportunidad  de recuperar la capacidad de moverse y hablar. Pero en este momento no hay forma de que podamos pagarlo.

 
Can you help make it possible for Daniel to get the rehabilitation he needs? Even a $20 gift for a day’s worth of diapers would be a help. $50 would cover a month of physical therapy. Our need is ongoing, so please donate generously!

One thing that is clear to me is that the tragic situation in Venezuela needs to be shown to the world. Daniel cannot speak, so I must speak on his behalf, and for all those like him who have been crushed by the regime and have no voice. I simply wish to communicate clearly the grave crisis we are living through, and ask you for help. We need your prayers, your financial help, and any political help you can give to solve this crisis and heal our nation.

Una cosa que tengo clara es que la trágica situación en Venezuela necesita mostrarse al mundo. Daniel no puede hablar, así que debo hablar en su nombre, y por todos aquellos que como él que han sido aplastados por el régimen y no tienen voz. Yo simplemente deseo comunicar claramente la grave crisis que estamos viviendo y pedirles ayuda. Necesitamos sus oraciones, su ayuda financiera y cualquier ayuda política que pueda brindar para resolver esta crisis y sanar a nuestra nación.
