Daniel Miller Medical Help

On Saturday, September 16th as the football crowd was leaving Kinnick, Daniel’s parents took him to the UofI E.D. Daniel had a couple days of mild abdominal pain that had gradually been worsening until he developed a fever in that day. On Sunday the 17th Daniel had an appendectomy. The surgery took way longer than expected and his parents later found out the surgeon had "never seen anything like it." His appendix was large, short and wide. This required a larger incision. Daniel later developed a fever and was not getting better. He tested positive for a virus but was released Thursday afternoon home.

Thursday night he ate a lot and by Friday morning looked much better. However he began to develop stomach pain and his parents took him back in for an ultrasound on Friday which checked out fine. He rallied Saturday afternoon but by Sunday the 24th he was miserable again. On the 2nd call to the Dr, his parents were advised to go back to the hospital.

He was admitted again Monday morning. After a lot of waiting & tests he tested positive for c-diff. There was also concern that he had a partial bowel obstruction which can be a complication after surgery.

The pain was excruciating for him. Helpful things like putting in an NG tube to relieve pressure on his stomach were torture.

Pain meds didn't last long enough. Pain meds didn't do enough. And then there was the waiting. Hours of waiting for test results and waiting for testing or imaging to be done.

After more and more testing, it was found to be concerning that Daniel might have an intestinal disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohns. In the midst of all this he is still fighting with the c-diff infection that causes diarrhea and the partial bowel blockage.

As you can imagine, this is all very exhausting to his parents, Josh and Emy. Josh and Emy are small business owners. Anyone who owns a small business knows that when the boss is out, productivity can decrease. In addition, as small business owners their health insurance is self purchased with a high deductible plan. We have developed this fund raiser to help stave off some of the extreme costs Josh and Emy will be facing. Please contribute in any way you can. And as always, prayers are extremely important.

And tomorrow, watch the Iowa Hawkeyes take on Michigan State at 7:37 pm. At the start of the second quarter, get your cameras ready and watch for Daniel and his parents joining in the Iowa wave. A tradition at every Iowa home football game when the entire stadium gets to wave at the children’s hospital built overlooking the stadium.
