Dani's Dream Shoes - A New Clubfoot Book

Donation protected
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and consider donating or purchasing a book!

Both of our daughters were born with club foot, a condition where an infants feet can be bent inwards and down. This condition impacts roughly 1 in 800 children globally. We were fortunate enough to live next to a wonderful children's hospital and get immediate care and treatment for our newborns. But, as many clubfoot parents know, the next step is assuring the children wear their boot and bar for the next few years to maintain their corrected feet.

As our children have grown, we've seen how well they have reacted to books that reflect things they do in real life - like potty training, driving in the car, and going the zoo. We went searching for some books that could also reflect their experience with their boot and bar. Unfortunately, some  of the current books available  for clubfoot kids don't really cover what we wanted.

So, we decided to give back to the clubfoot community by writing a children's book with the goals of highlighting the steps for putting on a bar that the children can follow along with, and still provide a fun, engaging story for the little human with professional artwork. Currently titled "Putting on My Dream Shoes", the book will first walk through the steps of putting on the boot and bar, and then highlight all the wonderful dreams the little child will have with their feet safe and secure - dreams like surfing the biggest waves, being an astronaut in space, or snowboarding with a yeti:

Dreams of Surfing

Dreams of being an Astronaut

Dreams of snowboarding with a yeti

Artistically, we want each dream to represent a different art style, and provide fun things for the young kids to find or count on each page (like the teddy bear, some wild fish, or the wild animals at the circus.)

The Goals of this fund:

- Build awareness for any parents interested in purchasing a book
- Cover artist costs (we found an amazing local artist in Oakland )
- Cover production costs and initial print of the board books  (Custom printed small-batch board books can be about $40 depending on the sizes and details). If there is enough interest, we'll definitely order a larger batch to drive down costs.
- Cover shipping costs
- Any excess money will be donated to Miraclefeet (https://www.miraclefeet.org/)

The Timeline:
The  goal is to have these books available for our daughters 2nd and 3rd birthday in September, so that means we'll be try to keep to the following schedule:

  • June - Draft digital prints and proof-reading
  • July - Final digital prints
  • August - Order first-run batch of board books
  • Sept - Happy birthday!
  • Nov/Dec - Place on Amazon

Thank you again for taking the time to read our story and consider helping out with this passion project.

If there is enough interest, I'm happy to explore limited customizations for the title pages (e.g. Dani's Dream Shoes)
