***TRIGGER WARNING*** Pics of Dann's injuries are at the very bottom of this post***
Hi, my name is Shannon and I am fundraising for Dann, my Dude BFF.
Dann Walker and I met in our early 20’s in Seattle. Almost from the get-go we were besties. At some point, we rented a house (tbh it was a shack) together, behind Goldie’s Tavern and by the Guild 45th Street Theaters in Wallingford. We took classes together at Shoreline Community College and road-tripped up and down the west coast. One of our SCC classes was SKING, with weekly trips to Alpental to get our PE credits for our Associates Degrees! Dann was my ‘dude-of-honor’ at my wedding! After I moved to NYC we lost touch for a few years.
The thing about BFF’s is they getcha. I got in over my head after I bought a barely floating house-barge, that I moored in Jamaica Bay, across from JFK airport. Danny volunteered to fly to New York to help me with the plumbing installation. He used his vacation time to help me get the ‘Pink Pirate’ ready for the coming season. It was a frigid March, the marina was FREEZING, and he got my shower hooked up to the onboard water pumps.
Dann’s contribution and support of his wide and varied communities
We all love Dann because of his generosity, positive attitude, and limitless enthusiasm to help others. His contributions to the Burning Man Community include, but are not limited to:
- Camp mechanical genius–fixing vehicles and everything else on the Playa
- Large-scale art design , engineering and installation
- Logistics and onsite fabrication in Black Rock City
The other months of the year Dann is an active participant with “Totally Legit ”, with his collaborative work installed at Bumbershoot. He has supported his community outside of BRC with fabrication and consulting. He’s a valued member of the community on and off the Playa.
I know I am not the only one Dann has generously helped. In our frequent phone calls, I get to hear about the cool projects and collaborators in his life. I feel reassured he has a strong community of friends, family, and support in the Seattle area and the Burning Man Community.
Accident July 4th
You may have heard that Dann incurred severe burns at the beginning of July. He suffered 2nd degree burns over his entire face, hands, and forearms. He was rushed by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center’s burn unit, where he spent 5 days.
While recuperating at home he began to experience severe complications, after a couple of days. He returned to Harborview for additional treatment. The burn debridement procedure was exceedingly painful. Dann was kept for inpatient treatment to manage pain and observe for signs of infection for another 4 days.
How to help
Dann’s injuries were extensive enough to require him to take 6 weeks off work. He is still waiting for the partially paid-leave paperwork to be approved. In the meantime, he has rent, food, utilities, medical copays, and a high deductible to pay, while his hand and forearm burns heal. We haven’t even started to tally the out-of-pocket costs for the 2 stays at the hospital.
I am creating the GoFundMe to give Dann some immediate cash flow, and possibly help with some of the longer-term expenses. If you can spare $5-20 as a donation it would be endlessly appreciated. If you are unable to donate cash it would be equally appreciated if you would share this GoFundMe on your social media.
For those who prefer you can Venmo Dann directly: @danielwalker10.
