Danny Brooks Funeral Expenses

My father set a high bar early on for what it means to help people.

Since I was young, he's gone out of his way to buy flip flops, socks, and meals for the homeless he encountered on the street. Most of the time they didn't even need to ask. He'd listen to anyone that needed nothing more than someone to talk to. Growing up, we housed countless friends of mine and my siblings for months on end who had nowhere else to go.

My dad continued this trend recently with his brother, Danny.

Even though my father is a recently divorced, single father of 13 children, he moved Danny from Wichita where he was living on the street to Lawrence, KS where he could have a roof over his head and hot meals whenever he wanted. Danny was never married, and had no children. He did always have a dog, and there was no way he was going to move without his boy, bear. They made that work also.

Now, my father needs help.

Early on August 18th, Danny got into an altercation outside of a grocery store. What exactly happened is unclear, but the end result is that Danny and his dog, Bear, were stabbed. Bear is expected to make a full recovery, but Danny, unfortunately, passed away at the scene.

In describing their relationship, my dad told me a story of how one day, when they were younger, he showed up on Danny's doorstep unannounced with a U-Haul full of his belongings, asking on the porch if he had room for my dad. Danny answered simply, "Yes" with no other questions. It was his way to be endlessly generous to anyone and everyone. He was gentle, quiet, and loving. He was loved greatly and is missed desperately.

This GoFundMe was made with the hope of covering cremation and celebration of life expenses while giving my dad a chance to grieve his brother and room mate.
