Darien Post 6933-Veterans Appeal to the Community

Donation protected
The Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has been a nonprofit fixture of the Darien Community for 78 years. The VFW building located at 205 Noroton Ave was originally the Chapel for Americas first Veterans home built in the mid 1800’s. The chapel is currently a large hall and the downstairs houses a working bar open to the public.
The primary mission of the Darien VFW is to foster camaraderie among United States Veterans, educate and support the community and provide resources to veterans and their family members.

Our only source of income to operate the VFW building are Hall rentals, bar income and the kind donations from the community. Like so many others, we were forced to close during COVID for a number of months. Since then, we haven’t been able to financially recover 100%.

We are dangerously close to having to close our doors because of rising costs and the lack of income. We are humbly reaching out to the residents of Darien and surrounding communities seeking donations so that we can continue our mission and keep our building open for many years to come.

“It would be a shame for us to let this wonderful piece of history slip by us. Anything the community can do to help is appreciated.” Said James Sparrow, Past Commander and long-life veterans advocate.

Another challenging area has been seeking out Veterans within the community that have left the service who are eligible to become members of the post. Many of them are busy with the young families and jobs or just don’t know that the VFW exists in their community.

The post home is a place where Veterans can come together with those who have shared experiences to reminisce, support each other and participate in events within the community.
One of the biggest misconceptions of our building is that residents don’t know that the bar, grounds and hall are open to the public. You don’t need to be a veteran to support the bar. In fact, the vast majority of those that patron the bar and grounds are NOT veterans.

Any assistance is deeply appreciated
Thank you,
The Members of the Darien VFW
