Darien's Bone Marrow Transplant

The way you live your life can change in a matter of seconds, trust me.

Hi, my name is Darien Khan and I have Cancer.
I am a 24-year-old who lives on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean. My life drastically changed on the 4th of March when I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

This diagnosis was a complete surprise. After i received my annual flu shot I got sick and experienced fevers, night-sweats and tonsillitis which persisted for a week. When it became clear that my flu was not going to get better with over the counter drugs I was taken to the Emergency Room where they found abnormalities in my blood work. After further tests were performed my doctor came to me and told me I have Leukemia and I need to receive immediate medical attention.

My Treatment

I am currently receiving treatment at the Cleveland Clinic Florida due to my country’s lack of medical resources. Initially, I underwent chemotherapy during the Induction Phase and successfully achieved remission, however everything doesn't always go as planned and due to my immunocompromised state, I developed an infection in my colon after my second round of chemo, which almost cost me my life. I was told I had a 20% chance of making it through this infection alive. I fought for three weeks in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital experiencing some of the most traumatic and painful moments of my life.

My ICU admission and care along with my Chemotherapy treatment has left myself and my family in debt. Currently I am on my 3rd and final session of chemotherapy but my treatment has just begun.

What do I need?

After having consultations with Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant specialists I have been told that I am in a category where relapse after only receiving chemotherapy is high. A relapse would mean that I have to repeat chemotherapy where I am not certain to achieve remission. They advise immediate Bone Marrow Transplant which will provide me a 90% chance of cure for my genetic mutation.

I urgently need to fly to Spain in the up coming weeks where I'll receive my transplant. I do not have medical insurance and this fund will provide me with the means of having my transplant done in a timely manner and also pay for my travel and living expenses at Spain.

Personal Message

I would like to thank my family, friends, well-wishers and those who I have yet to meet for their support and generosity towards me in my time of need. I am blessed to have all these people in my life. I am also grateful for the medical team who has been working to provide me with the best care available and also the advancements in medical technology which have kept me alive and improved my medical condition.

A Bone Marrow Transplant means a cure, it means that I can have my life back, that I don’t have to live day to day wondering if/when my disease will relapse, it means life!

Thank you for the contributions you have all made towards my life.
