Darla's Eye Surgery

Donation protected
Darla is a newly divorced mother currently raising 2 young kids and working as a personal trainer. 2017 was a challenging year for the family: going through a divorce, after 18 years of marriage, moving out of their home, and encountering some unexpected personal challenges along the way. With the divorce finalized, and circumstances stabilizing, she was looking forward to an amazing 2018 filled with excitement, expected challenges and new opportunities. There were (and are) many things on the list to accomplish and move forward with.
One small thing (she thought at the time) that needed to be done, was a trip to the eye doctor. She had been noticing her vision deteriorating rather dramatically over the last year. Everything…and I mean everything, was blurry all the time. So she just assumed she needed a stronger prescription. She made an appointment with a local optometrist, and long story short...
Her doctor discovered a progressive corneal disease called Keratoconus in both the left and right eyes. Keratoconus is a condition that causes the cornea to thin out and bulge, resulting in increasingly blurry vision. It makes daily tasks like driving, reading, and recognizing people from across the room, more and more difficult. If left untreated, the disease will continue to progress toward near or total blindness. In years past, the only treatment for this type of Keratoconus was a corneal transplant, but new and exciting techniques have provided less invasive ways to not only STOP the progression of this disease, but also REPAIR some of the damage that has been done to your vision over the years.
more normal state. Unfortunately, although FDA approved, NEITHER procedure is covered by any type of insurance, and the cost is substantial. For both procedures the cost will be $9500 per eye plus travel and hotel expenses. Considering the progressive nature of the disease, and the impact that it is already having on her daily life, time is of the essence to save and preserve the most vision possible. Surgery has not been scheduled yet, and we will update this page when that date is set.
We greatly appreciate all monetary donations and your prayers.
