Darryl’s Story

Back in November 2019 Darryl suffered a seizure while at work, luckily he was in the shop that morning; usually he would be out on the road as a mobile truck mechanic.  After being taken to the hospital it was discovered that Darryl had quite a large Brain Tumor.  He was quickly referred to Sunnybrook Hospital where Dr’s determined the best course of action would be surgery. While the diagnosis of a brain tumor would naturally devastate any of us, Darryl didn’t let it define him or stop living his day to day life.

Fast forward to January 21st when Darryl had surgery to have the tumor removed.  To say it went well would be an understatement.  Mere hours after the surgery, Darryl was talking and in good spirits…there was even discussion of him going home the next day (most spend at least 2-3 days in hospital after this type of surgery) .  The Dr’s said everything went well and were confident they got all of the tumor.  Not only did Darryl go home the next day, he went to his son’s hockey game in Peterborough 2 days later.  Darryl was on his way to recovery and keeping a positive mindset looking forward to putting all of this behind him and getting back to normal life.  All he was waiting for was the pathologists findings, but even that seemed like just a formality given all the positive feedback he’d had from the Dr’s and how he was feeling, which was pretty good other than being tired from the medications he was taking.

On February 5th, Darryl, and his wife Laura headed to Sunnybrook fully expecting to get the positive results they needed to end this unpleasant chapter in their lives.  Much to their shock and devastation, the results weren’t favorable.  They were told Darryl had a rare form of Brain Cancer, Grade 3 Astrocytoma.  You can only imagine how unprepared they were to leave the appointment with a Chemoradiation treatment plan that would start in 2 weeks and last for 6 weeks.

Darryl is a lifelong resident of Bowmanville, where he resides with his wife Laura, 10 year old son Jaxson and 3 year old daughter Georgia.  It’s no surprise to anyone who knows Darryl what a dedicated family man he is.  He has always prided himself on being a hard worker, often working 50-60 hours a week.  Since his seizure, Darryl has been unable to work and has temporarily had his drivers license suspended.  Needless to say, this have been a HUGE change of pace for Darryl and his family.  As he does with everything in his life, Darryl is ready to get his treatment started and fight this Cancer with EVERYTHING he’s got!!!

As any of us can imagine, being off work for the last 3 months and now facing months of recovery ahead, the financial impact this will have on the family is something nobody can prepare for.  Reality is, if he hadn’t had that seizure back in November, he wouldn’t have known he was sick.  While Darryl’s family and friends would do anything to help in his fight to KICK CANCER’s ASS, we feel mostly helpless.  We thought this GoFundMe would be the best way we could help.  Not only will it allow Darryl and his family to concentrate on the road ahead and getting better, we hope it relieves some of the unexpected and unfair financial burden that comes with any Cancer diagnosis.  I can tell you that beyond the financial donations, Darryl and his family will be even more humbled, grateful and positive knowing all of the people they have in their corner rooting for them.
