#MacStrong Daryl McDaniel Journey

Donation protected
#MacStrong is a fitting description of the strength of the McDaniel family. No one expects the diagnosis of a rare, incurable, complicated cancer.  Cancer of the Appendix??  Peritoneal Cancer? Pseudomyxoma peritonei?  What? Who gets that??  But when it happens, the resilience of your family and loved ones is amazing.

The response from family, loved ones and friends has been one of much appreciated support, endless offers, and prayers. There have been several that have asked to make donations to the family, knowing how financially detrimental something like this can be.

My father and stepmother would never ask for financial donations, and have politely turned them down, responding with we just appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

I have spent the past several weeks in Chicago with my dad during his evaluation and treatment, and then the subsequent huge surgery. I have watched thousands of $$$ be spent within a matter of a couple weeks. Insurance is truly a blessing, but the out of pocket and incidentals are massive. And then there does come a time of max coverage.

They will be traveling back and forth to this wonderful center in Chicago, where they have skillfully performed a very complex, infrequently done, 19 hour extensive surgery for his rare and incurable appendicial cancer. He has been inpatient here for at least 3 weeks, then will be making frequent travel back and forth for follow ups for the first year. Beyond the usual health insurance costs, there are mounting travel expenses and escalating home health and pharmacy and just simple comfort costs.  He needs a caregiver to travel with him through the airports, flights and hotels.  This is proving to be costly as well...this week's airline ticket being $700 for one caregiver.

I know this has only scratched the surface. So for those that have asked to donate, I have opened this site to graciously and humbly accept as a means to relieve one more stress off of them.

For those not donating, I eagerly invite you to enjoy reading and sharing, as much as I've enjoyed writing, this book of lifetime achievements of the guy we proudly know as Daryl, Dad, Papa Mac, Chief, President, and sometimes just Mac.

For those that have not had the pleasure of truly knowing Daryl McDaniel, let me share with you why this guy is so well loved, well respected, and deserves the best of everything. ..
This is a man who not only holds the "A" (top postion) in our family, but holds the rest of these letters together
This is a man who started his youngest adult years with the commitment to serve others (as the oldest brother, lead by example, as well as providing noogies, beat downs, and proper embarrassments when called for)

And continued that commitment by choosing a lifetime career in Public Safety, where he continued to lead by example, provide encouragement and personal growth to his men, but also beat downs and proper embarrassments when needed...lol,  (shout out to the old Dekalb boys!)

Rose through the ranks proving his leadership skills and true commitment for others, beloved and respected by all that served with him

Making lifetime friends and trusted colleges....Perez and Radar attending my wedding and celebrating birthdays and life in general with our family. A true brotherhood that you find no where else but a fire house

With decades of devoted service, the honor bestowed upon him of not just ONE retirement....

But TWO retirements

Two retirements behind him just gave the opportunity for him to faithfully serve his community in other directions....(though due to surgery, having to cancel his trip to assist underprivileged youth). He has thoroughly enjoyed Presidency of his Longview Lions Club, and now has joined the Dothan Chapter

This is the kind of dad always offering support and advice. ..the one rock solid person in my life I count on to tell me how it really is...whether it's what I want to hear or not.

This is the type of dad that will grow his family to all sorts of branches. ..taking each one in as his own

The type of guy who always has a story...even if half the shit is made up. ..lol

Always the photo bomber

Must be genetic

Strives to be the best at everything he does

Even if it means "letting" the kids win one

Papa Mac is the first one to jump in and show us how to have fun

Whether it's vertical. ..

or accidentally horizontal

Papa Mac teaches us how to love...

and how to be boy scouts...

and is the first one to challenge the kids to do something new

He's the oldest son to a father and mother that think the world of him

He's the oldest brother

He's the type of husband that doesn't hesitate to take his beautiful wife on the dance floor

or to climb the mountains in Maui

He's the dad that creates adventure...that Road to Hana...he drives like the lights and sirens are always running...lol.

Our dad has taught us how to stand tall, be proud, and take care of ourselves

He loves holiday "traditions"

From then...

to now. ..always riding life to the fullest
