Dash Gurung's Treatment in Canada
Donation protected
On 14th Feb 2021 Dash suffered a catastrophic brain injury that led to him spending 5months and 1 day in the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. He was in a coma for 19 days and had 4 rounds of brain surgery. His doctors were unsure if he would pull through and what his functioning would be if he did. When he did come out of the coma, Dash was unable to talk or use the right side of his body. Eventually, with his sheer determination and his crazy zen dude spirit he started to recover.
Fast forward 3 years and Dash is being the best he can be. He attends school as much as possible, is obsessed with padel, does therapy more hours per week than we can count and loves life . Surrounded by his tribe of people and pets, he is happy and generous and funny and loving.
However, Dash has significant challenges. He spends every holiday in Sydney working 3-4hours each day to try to regain function in his right upper limb, he has significant academic challenges and suffers debilitating cognitive fatigue. He manages to attend school 60% ish of the time but often just cannot do anymore. His brain gets so exhausted trying so hard all the time that he has to come home and rest.
At the end of June Dash will travel to Canada to have treatment on his brain not offered here in Australia. The treatment involves lasers that will hopefully support his brain health and contribute to his rehabilitation. We are desperately hoping that the cutting edge laser treatment at the Bioflex clinic will help reduce his cognitive fatigue, crippling headaches and increase his brain neuroplasticity to be able to achieve more in his rehab.
None if this treatment is covered by NDIS or Medicare.
One of Dash’s favourite TV shows is Ted Lasso. From Ted, we have focused on the word ‘Believe’ and the phrase ‘fight forward’ to inspire us to be the best we can be in the now, and to make sure we are looking to the future.
