Dave & Lee's third & FINAL(!!) hike for Macmillan
TO ALL KIND AND GENEROUS FOLK OUT THERE
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
On Saturday, 2nd September 2023, Lee TUXFORD and Dave EVANS will be walking 25.44 miles, including a total climb of 2,838 feet, near Callander in Scotland, as a Penguins Against Cancer duo in aid of MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT
WILL IT BE HORRIBLE? In a word – YES.
This is definitely our third and FINAL(!!!) Macmillan Mighty Hike; our previous two were Wales (Wye Valley 2019) and England (Jurassic Coast 2021), this time Scotland is the venue.
The terrain is described as “hilly”, which we feel is rather optimistic. On closer inspection, we feel that it should be more accurately labelled “Himalayan”.
It’s fair to say that we were both reasonably fit at some time in our lives. However, we are rapidly approaching 60 and suffering from more than our share of the decrepitude expected by ‘post middle aged’ has-beens. Our physical deterioration has been more noticeable than in previous years during our varied and numerous training walks.
It will be really hard going for us and we are expecting a combination of dreich (that’s Scottish for their type of miserable rain), freezing temperatures, fog, blisters and the dreaded Scottish midges but we will never give up.
WHY ARE WE DOING IT?
We initially chose to raise money for Macmillan in 2019 after close family and friends were seriously ill with cancer. In the intervening four years we have become acutely aware of just how many more people we know have started living with cancer. Tragically, a significant minority have also died as a result. This year we have joined Penguins Against Cancer (PAC) in their quest to raise cancer awareness and provide support to cancer research, cancer treatment and hospices.
Macmillan exists to help people living with cancer by providing vital practical and emotional support for those who need it at their most vulnerable time. We think this is a noble and worthwhile cause.
All monies raised will be donated to Macmillan and it is hoped (subject to PAC Trustees’ approval) that the amount we raise will be matched by PAC up to a maximum of £2000.
The charity Penguins Against Cancer (PAC) was set up late in 2013, the aim being
The advancement of health and the saving of lives of people affected by cancer.
PAC has no start-up or running costs: every penny donated goes to the fight against cancer.
So far, PAC has raised and disbursed over £310,000 to support cancer research, cancer treatment and hospices. Check out their website and see what has been achieved:
Registered Charity Number 1159905
SO, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
Simple, DONATE whatever you can via this GoFundMe page. ££££
We’ll endure the hike, Macmillan, through PAC will benefit from all of it.
Please let’s raise a huge total for our final effort.
Thanks in advance,
Dave & Lee
