Dave Moody's Cancer, Heart Surgery and Transplant
Donation protected
Hello everyone! This is Becca Jardine, writing you today on behalf of my dad, Dave Moody. We want to use this space to continue sharing updates as we navigate this world of cancer, cardiac surgery, and liver transplant. For those of you who may not have heard or been here from the beginning, let me start by sharing how we got here.
The day Dave and my mom Susan moved into their house near Jacksonville, Dave had intense internal bleeding that led to finding out his previously-diagnosed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was rapidly progressing. After going through the liver transplant evaluation process at Mayo Clinic, it was discovered that in addition to his NAFLD cirrhosis, he also had a triple blockage in his heart in a place where it’s difficult and high risk to treat considering his liver issues. This led Mayo to make the decision to deny his transplant as too high risk. During further testing to find a transplant team elsewhere, the news only got worse as we found out he also has liver cancer.
We immediately began looking for second/third opinions with a team willing to address Dave’s challenging condition that could lead to a life-saving transplant. In his unique case, one really can't be fixed without the other. Everything is connected and the only hope was to get all aspects addressed by health care professionals working together. He reached out to many different facilities including his previous doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. In typical Tennessee fashion, after months of feeling rejected and at times forgotten by the doctors he'd talked to, he felt welcomed with their genuine concern. The doctors are positive and confident and are urgently developing a treatment plan to give Dave a new lease on life!
However, this does mean that Dave and Susan will need to relocate temporarily to Nashville for months to be ready at a moment's notice for the procedures, surgery, and ultimate transplant when the time comes for each stage of the process. While waiting for the transplant, they will be doing evaluations, treating and monitoring his cancer, continued testing, and heart bypass surgery. In addition, he will need to remain in Nashville post-surgery and transplant to be monitored carefully for several months. We realize there's a long and narrow path ahead, but thankful for the opportunity to walk it.
This is where we come to you, humbly and prayerfully asking for your help. First with your continued prayers for our family and all the doctors and caregivers on his team. Secondly, this will be a time-consuming and financially draining season that could easily approach $100,000 out of pocket after insurance with travel, lodging, medicine, out-of-network and out-of-state facilities and services. We are asking for your assistance, if able, to contribute anything you can afford towards the mounting evaluation, surgery, treatments, travel and relocation costs so that we can bring Dad (a.k.a. Grandy) back to Florida ready and able to spend time with his wife, our family and continue to love on his grandkids.
Let me say this. We firmly believe in the power of prayer and the sovereignty of God. We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but we know who is already there ahead of us, and who is carrying us through this ordeal. When we find ourselves without words and buckling under the weight of this trial, we have all felt the prayers and concerns of family, friends, and peers around the world sustaining and uplifting us. Thank you. THANK YOU. It means more than we can adequately express through words.
So, we appreciate you walking beside us through this. If you know my dad, you know he has always had a big heart and one who is willing to help others in any way he can. Your financial support will tangibly decrease his burden now and your prayerful support will increase our hope as we face this difficult road head-on. WE COULD NOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU!
