David and Heidi Gaul Emergency Fund

For my friend Heidi Gaul, writing is a ministry. A gifted devotional and fiction writer, she often tells stories about divine detours. Little did she know that she and her husband David had a doozy of a detour ahead.

On August 18, 2020, David was trimming a tree when he fell from an extension ladder to the cement below. Heidi called 911, and David was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, Oregon. Doctors determined that Dave had not only broken two ribs, but also suffered a skull fracture causing a concussion and bleeding in his brain.

Heidi wrote this from his hospital room: "I am grateful for all your prayers, and Dave is even more thankful that you took the time to place him before God in prayer. With this blanket of prayer, I don't question whether this will be a full and complete recovery. I'm confident it will. Now it's just a question of how quickly it will go, and God's got that figured out."

David has made great strides, but much of the battle is still ahead. Brain injuries can take an extended time to heal and bills will soon be piling up.

Heidi and Dave made a choice years ago to live frugally, investing their time in each other and in friends and family. He works limited hours at a hardware store (and won't be returning for some time) and Heidi makes a minimal income from her writing. For years they'd been socking away every spare dime for a long-dreamed-of trip to Europe intending to explore David's heritage and spend time with extended family.  But, as you know, 2020 had other ideas. That vacation fund is currently inaccessible--hopelessly bound up in postponed reservations and tickets. (I have wondered if this is God's way of protecting that dream for the future!)

I'm hoping we can raise enough to ease Heidi and Dave's worries as they navigate through this period of healing. The next few weeks and months will be critical as they are tied up in doctor's appointments, medical tests, and occupational and physical therapy. The doctors think David *might* be able to return to work in late September, but just for two hours at a time.

Our #1 goal is to get everyone praying for a complete recovery. The secondary goal is to see how much we can help with doctor's bills, medical supplies, groceries, and other expenses. We all know that the bills don't stop just because we've hit a temporary roadblock. This is our chance to be a blessing.

As Heidi wrote on FB the other day, "Now the real work and the real healing begin. And we are thrilled. Thank you for your prayers—I believe they spurred a miracle!"

Thank you for blessing Dave and Heidi!
