David Appleby - Memory Care & Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Davey and I have gone back and forth about whether to make this public, but we ultimately decided that getting our dad the care he needs is more important than our pride. That said, this is a request for financial assistance.

On 8/17, our dad began behaving erratically (as in psychosis-like behavior). This had happened before about a year ago after he had misused some of his medications, so we took his meds and waited to see if he leveled out. He did not. On the evening of 8/19, Bobby and I took Dad to St. Luke's Hospital where a scan revealed that he had a fracture at the base of his skull and had bleeding on his brain. We and the doctors can only assume this happened as the result of a fall.

Our dad was admitted to ICU and was actually on a ventilator for a couple of days at one point. He was in ICU for two weeks, followed by another two weeks of observation. He was finally released to a personal care home on 9/14 after being at St. Luke's for more than a month during which time I practically lived there.

After just one night, the personal care home determined they could not give him the level of care he requires. Bottom line, our dad will require memory care in a sealed-unit facility where he can receive physical/occupational and speech therapy. He is confused, doesn't believe he needs help, and constantly paces, searching for exits. On 9/15, Dad was transported to Tomball Hospital, and he has been receiving care in their senior unit there ever since 9/18.

At some point in the next week or two, Tomball Hospital is going to release him, at which point Davey and I will need to have selected a memory care facility as his new home. If you don't know anything about memory care facilities, these typically cost $5k-PLUS per month. Our dad gets $2,777/month in Social Security. Moreover, the cap for Medicaid eligibility is $2,742, so just $35/month stands in the way of us getting the financial assistance that could help close the gap.

For those of you who have seen Davey and I posting bedroom sets, couches, TVs, microwaves, etc. on Facebook -- these are our dad's belongings. We are trying to sell them to help pay for his medical and living expenses. Please share these with anyone who might be interested.

We have resigned ourselves to the fact that we will have to accept the cheapest, viable option which will likely result in Dad being nearly an hour away. Beggars can't be choosers. Dad had also accumulated a fair amount of debt in addition to his medical expenses that we are trying to navigate in addition to attorney's fees for getting guardianship of him.

This is hard, guys. Asking for help and making private family business public is hard. However, if there's anything that Davey and I have going for us, it's that we have a big network of supportive family and friends. So we're coming to you to ask that you help us out if you're able.
